I won something last time without registering a card and just ended up with an invoice from the auction house ages later. Not the smoothest transaction by a long shot either
Yes, you really could screw up every bid fairly easily.

Agreed, the fee to bidding online is prohibitive. It's a suckers fee to catch someone caught up in the moment imo. If one really liked something they should either submit an absentee bid, be there in person or on the phone. There terms are copied below. Further on down the page, they also note that many (probably most) of the lots in this sale will be subject to droite de suite charges payable to living artists which is 4% up to Β£50k and a decreasing scale (% wise) above that. So, you would add droite de suite, shipping charges (if any), and the following:
"Buyerβs Premium. The Buyer agrees to pay a buyer's premium on the hammer price of each lot purchased. The buyer's premium is 20% of the hammer price on each lot up to and including Β£250,000, plus 12% for any amount in excess of Β£250,000. In addition where a lot has been purchased through or using the services of ATG Online Live Auctions, or any other live online auction services, a further additional charge of 3% is payable on the hammer price of each lot purchased. VAT at the prevailing rate of 17.5% is added to all of these premiums and additional charges as defined below. "
Good luck to those in the hunt. I'm on the sidelines for this one though I would love that Monkey Detonator in my home the most.
