Replete π¬π§ TPN Crew Graffiti β’ Leeds Graffiti Artist, by Replete on Feb 3, 2009 20:02:20 GMT 1, Hi all just thought I'd show you the finished "To Don The Amour Propre" canvas that was based on one of my recent sketches a lot of people on here liked.
It's 24 x 36" and painted in acrylics and spraypaint.
I really tried to push my painting technique on this one and I think I managed to capture the facial features and subtleties in the original sketch.
The meaning behind the piece "To Don The Amour Propre " is about self esteem as Amour Propre means that in french and the title is a play on donning the armour of self esteem as the forms in the piece are like a armoured exoskeleton (like insects which ties in with Replete being a type of ant) she's wearing as her self esteem protects her from the slings and arrows of others and the trials of modern life.
Hope you like it as much as I enjoyed painting it and any feedback is welcomed.

I think its probably the best canvas ive seen you do, I reckon you should do something similar and incorporate some of the original grey that was in the sketch.

The shading gives it real depth, easy to get lost in this image. Real strong sense of movement or writhing to my eye as well, which is so hard to do in a still image. Simply stunning.

I look to past masters like Caravaggio or Turner where there light and dark take on a life of their own and add a whole new level to the work, bringing energy in places and hinting at something brooding in the shadows.
Some of the series of female portraits will be less futuristic and more naturalistic/organic with a all pervading but subtle use of light and in one case hopefully I hope to get somewhere towards Turner's light but with the use of spraypaint instead of oils.
