The olsen twins were not the only celeb there...., by ยฎat on Sept 28, 2007 3:46:01 GMT 1, I know christina went and bought something, but she wasnt at the 5pm preview as far as I am aware. She was shown before that even... an extra special pre pre preview. And I am sure jack/Sharon bought the original Minotaur piece at a cool $240000.... they were certainly taking an interest in it for a while.

The olsen twins were not the only celeb there...., by jam on Sept 28, 2007 4:48:52 GMT 1, I was among the first 10-15 people in at the preview and when I walked in I took a brisk walk by everything to see what was still available in the range I wanted to pay. Minotaur, UZI 1 & 2, Peace Keeper, as well as Appearance Is Everything, Beautiful Bomber, and Hope in Hollywood all had sold stickers on them already. Holly mentioned at the hotel the night before that members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Christina Aguilera made purchases over the weekend so I would imagine they bought all those pieces between them. The Osbournes got there around 6 and I was told they bought the Campaigners 1 & 2 (makes sense as there were red stickers on them as soon as they left), along with the large angel sculpture (1 of 3) in the basement. The Olsens weren't there until around 7:30 and everything but one piece was sold on the main floor so I am not sure they bought anything.

The olsen twins were not the only celeb there...., by nombei on Sept 28, 2007 5:33:19 GMT 1, whenever i see comments about celebs buying art it's always put in a negative way. which makes me wonder, are celebs not allowed to like art? or are they just not allowed to like certain artists?

Thanks Jam, that's an interesting post. What sort of reaction, in general, has there been to the show? I read Juxtapoz's reaction to it and it wasn't exactly gushing. Any mainstream coverage over there?

The olsen twins were not the only celeb there...., by motor on Sept 28, 2007 8:36:58 GMT 1, I remember James Franco the bloke from Spiderman coming in around 7pm
Anyway I am also more interested in general comment on the show from different perspective(which I think was amazing- but who am I). So far it was more about the LAz as a company and not much about Micallef as an artist.

Be on the lookout for it in the next month or so! I'm sure it'll end up on the cutting room floor though as I'm looking at myself and i'm pretty ugly.

You should be happy if you end up on the cutting room floor! I think that segment he's taping is called "Jaywalking", where he goes around asking questions about current events. Answers from the dumbest people are usually featured (well, he's a comedian!)... so if you make it to air, then well... heehee!! ;D

funny enough that segment was stolen from Howard Stern...

The olsen twins were not the only celeb there...., by ABC on Sept 29, 2007 16:15:23 GMT 1, There is one question Id like to put to the panel.
If Micallef was not managed by Laz and if the Celebs/Stars were not on Lazs client list already, would People be paying ยฃ50K min for works from an artist they have never heard of? Im just curious as Laz seems to have a client list that would buy a Dog turd if he said it was the next up and coming thing. Now don't get me wrong, I love Micallefs work and bought prints before he was signed to Laz (so Im not on the Bandwaggon) Its just the latest prices are crazy for his originals and from what I was told there was hardly anybody at the show/exhibition at all after the preview compared to the likes of the Banksy show. All I will say on the matter is that Laz is very good at manipulating the market and will charge what ever he likes regardless of what he is selling.

I would tend to agree with your point Ant, but in the interests of debate, I would add a potential caveat. The money that the celebs are paying is relative to their available funds. So 50k to a millionaire is not so removed from the likes of us paying a couple of grand. Therefore if the celeb likes the picture, even if they don't love it, perhaps they would take a punt on an unknown artist. And lets be fair, there were some superb black and white oils available which, if money was no object, could justifiably have been snapped up purely on the quality of aesthetics, rather than Laz's spin.
So in summary they probably wouldn't except for the minority of them that were genuine fans of this type of art.

I am not that good with words but I try
Probably not. However that's all IF. The true is that the Laz is a gallery with one of the best PR and with established celeb clientele. Because of that Laz will make sure that their investment will end up in Christie's and Sotheby's... I agree there are soo many talented artist around however talent is not all that is necessary in order to make it big worldwide(similar like actors). As an example I would mention Adam Neate-huge talent but he will never be recognized outside this forum 'bubble' without proper PR no matter how good we think he is. Worldwide he is and will be an unknown artist (and he is commanding prices similar to AM). Personally I see lots of hatred and envy toward Laz. Don't get me wrong I don't like the guy at all but I do respect him & Co. hugely for what have they done for the street art scene and that they are partially responsible for bringing street art to the mainstream of modern art. Banksy wouldn't be talked about that much without Laz and Laz wouldn't be talked about without Banksy. The likes of Micallef, Faile, Harrington are IMO exciting news for mainstream and I wish there are more talents like them coming in. If I just browse through the Sotheby's catalog there is nothing apart from few artists which I could be excited about. I think that artists coming through Laz are a breath of fresh air despite that it is done through massive PR. Something like that... Laz is not the only one but they are only one making it happen at the moment (hopefully not the only one for long).

The olsen twins were not the only celeb there...., by tomjedimaster on Sept 30, 2007 2:40:42 GMT 1, I just checked out the show and the thing that sticks out in my mind is what a cool space it was held in. I enjoy his artwork but it just didn't have the impact on me as his last show in October, even though the canvases were much larger. I wasn't left with the impression that he has evolved from his last body of work, which came as a surprise to me. As for the prices, well I guess they were priced for the celebrities.
By the way, the minotaur and uzi 1 and 2 was bought by anthony kiedis.
