Pure Evil., by stuey09 on Jun 16, 2007 21:33:15 GMT 1, Regarding Their Satanic Bastards' why restrict the personalities to Hitler, Stalin etc. Too easy. Would like to have seen some of the Daily Mail's favourites featured. Murderers such as Bush, Isreali leaders, even Blair. Gee Vauchers picture of the Sex Pistols that had the heads replaced with the Pope, Thatcher, The Queen and Staue of Liberty was much better IMO

The picture was a record cover for a Crass track (Feeding of the 5000 if I remember rightly) I think a print of it came up for a charity auction a couple of years ago, but I don't think it is generally available. Good image though eh.

That's a quote from Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865), the first person to take the title of Anarchist, used to have it written on my school bag ahh happy days

It's a philosophy for life that one, Proudhon's just ahead of Nietzsche for my favourite quotes, he came up with "property is theft" as well.

i'm pleased that i bought the print... even if i can't tell whether mine is number 10 or 16.
now if only i could do something to replace christopher lee on the bastards print (just seems so out of place) then i'd have one of those as well.

Pure Evil., by Pure Evil on Jul 4, 2007 17:37:05 GMT 1, um... I think he is a great artist and he is a better painter than me by about 1000000 times but I think this is f**king UGLY..
There is a whole kind of morbidly beautiful / Juxtapoz magazine look going on in American art , you know the vibe : for example : a really well rendered photorealistic painting of a Siamese Twin wearing a Nazi SS outfit with an exposed bleeding heart with a bird nesting in it with a syringe riding a tricycle down a lane in vietnam...
its all so loaded with symbolism and im sure Marilyn Manson buys a lot of it but it really ends up meaning NOTHING to me ... ahhhh Vienna

Very true, the movement towards overtly realistic paintings coupled with radical juxtaposition of symbols is very big right now in the U.S. It does seem to be a rebirth of 'photorealism' and Ryden along with other US artist are making a push that way. (and their pocket books are getting a hefty upgrade)
While they have certainly appealed to the 'high art' crowd with their outrageous pricetags, I feel that subject matter of these paintings are aimed at the general population.
The challenge to recognize beauty in the grotesque and tragic is something everyone faces.

Yea, this was the exact type of work I was referring to also. BUT, I don't understand what you hate about it? Is it just the bizarre subject matter that you find "wack", or that it is painted in exquisite detail (regardless of the meaning behind the piece) I take it that you aren't too interested in it because you fail to "connect" with the piece. *(This sentiment is shared by a large percentage of people) I will agree with you on that point 100%.
Thanks for voicing your perspective, I always enjoy hearing what other artists think about contemporary work. Cheers.

Pure Evil., by numusic on Jul 5, 2007 20:28:12 GMT 1, Ya know, I used to hate this type of work also. I just didn't get it... pop surrealism. Seemed to be a real dumbing down "only in america" type thing. But the more I've got into Urban art, it's led to lookjing at the likes of Charkes Krafft, Mcgee, Beautiful losers, Outsider art, low brow art etc.. tracking it back all the way through skate & surf culture and back to the 50's kustom car and hot rod scenes. It's quite fascinating.. kinda of 50's americana meets the adam's family meets pop. I couldn't live with it on the wall, but the more I read, the more I understand, the less I hate. It's the iconography of educated loners, outsiders, freaks and high school massacre kids. Maybe not so relevant here.. But I like the idea of a Unabomber stuck in a log cabin deep in the forrest painting twisted kids with bleedin hearts whilst plotting the downfall of the Federal Government.
Unabomber Art for the masses :-)
(still don't like it though)

Pure Evil., by Pure Evil on Jul 5, 2007 23:13:22 GMT 1, Thats weird that you reference the Unabomber. I watched a film about what he did today... I was living in California when he was active and he was totally anti=progress and anti technology... he was a total troglodyte... I LOVE Barry McGee / TWIST , I would never be doing what Im doing now if it wasn't for seeing his character art on walls in San Francisco in the 90's...
but this is different...
I think if we look back at the mutant '50's americana meets the adam's family meets pop' or MORBID BEAUTY kind of look that is coming out of the USA now , I think it is a kind of mutant / end of days / 'throw every kind of s**t against the wall and see what sticks' mentality that is going on in American society that signals the downfall of BABYLON.. and it makes me feel uneasy....
I lived in California for 10 years but you know what, most people don't want to watch the news there.. they want to watch CAGE FIGHTING or MOTORCYCLE CUSTOMISATION or PIMP MY RIDE programs and it makes me SICK.. I felt like my IQ was going down the more I was living there and this art kind of reminds me of that... and thats why I don't like it... its trying to create meaning from a very shallow gene pool of experience...
does that make ANY sense
