"This is China": Bast, SPQR, Pure Evil, Josh Keyes, by RedStarPress on Nov 14, 2008 5:12:42 GMT 1, PRESS RELEASE: Red Star Press
Red Star Press presents This is China at BLVD Gallery, Seattle, Washington
December 12, 2008 โ December 20, 2008
Red Star Press proudly presents This is China, a group exhibition featuring Chinaโs most exciting and cutting edge urban and graffiti artists. This is China is an exploration of key issues affecting Chinaโs economy, environment, and culture through the eyes of the people. The exhibit will showcase new artwork by 0528, Steel Dan, Soos, Cui Nan, Ha Shiyou, Zhang Qitian, Popil, Shen Jingdong, and Yang Jun.
Graffiti is considered a serious crime in China, and violators incur harsh penalties from the government. Ironically, the Chinese government recently commissioned a number of public graffiti pieces during the 2008 Olympics to portray positive messages about China and the Olympic games. Local graffiti artists were outraged that their art form was used as a government propaganda tool and wanted to do something about it. This is China is a showcase of graffiti and urban art by Chinese artists without the influence of the Chinese government.
The show will also feature special collaboration pieces between Chinese and non-Chinese urban and graffiti artists. Confirmed artists include Presto (Brazil), Pure Evil (UK), Josh Keyes (USA), Bast (USA), and SPQR (UK.) UK Based graffiti artist Pure Evil is no stranger to the Chinese graffiti art scene as he held a solo show in Beijing in 2007. Pure Evil recently stated, "I visited Beijing in November and I was blown awayโฆit completely surpassed all expectations I had. China is at a tipping point now, and itโs a fascinating place to beโฆthe art reflects this paradigm shift." Pure Evil will be collaborating with Chinese artist, Zhang Qitian, to produce a piece that addresses Chinaโs economy.
The exhibit will run from December 12, 2008 through December 20, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. โ 6:00 p.m. daily.
About Red Star Press: Founded in 2007, Red Star Press is a Chinese Contemporary art collective that promotes and sells Chinese urban and graffiti art. The main goal of Red Star Press is to bring Chinese urban art and Chinese graffiti art to the masses. Red Star Pressโ offices are located in Beijing, China and Seattle, Washington.

"This is China": Bast, SPQR, Pure Evil, Josh Keyes, by Heavyconsumer on Nov 14, 2008 7:11:59 GMT 1, Just out of curiosity, will you be showing the works in Seattle only? Would the art itself be too contraversial in nature to exhibit in China? Would you wish to exhibit in China, if you could?

"This is China": Bast, SPQR, Pure Evil, Josh Keyes, by RedStarPress on Nov 14, 2008 7:32:26 GMT 1, These will only be shown in Seattle. The Chinese government is known for censoring and banning shows with controversial art. We were told by several local galleries that there was a good chance we would get shut down before the doors opened.
p.s. here's a sneak peak of one of the collaboration pieces

I love this piece! It's very very very tastey! I was already a big fan of some of Cui Nan's work and this really works well imo. It's interesting to see JK's work take on a whole new dimension like this. I wonder what he thinks of it...
PS....I do wish you'd revive images of that deep blue abstract piece of his you had on your site, it disappeared around the time you went live. Was it sold/sent off for an exhibition/added to your personal treasure chest? Where did it go?

"This is China": Bast, SPQR, Pure Evil, Josh Keyes, by joshkeyes on Nov 17, 2008 8:32:46 GMT 1, Thanks for the comments! ;D
This is a painting collaboration I recently finished working on. The other artist is Cui Nan. Here is a link to his work.
www.redstarpress.com/artists-32-Cui_Nan.html
This was a great challenge for me, when the painting arrived I kept turning it and trying to see what I could bring and add to the work. Finally, I visualized a giant raincloud and thought of a monsoon.
The obstacles were in the materials and preparation. Cui painted the entire canvas in oils, I use acrylic. For those of you who may not know the archival properties of painting, acrylic paint should never be applied over oil or spray paint. It will peel or crack away from the surface over time. You can however paint oils and spray paint over acrylic assuming that the oil paint is thick enough.
I decided where I was going to paint and then sanded down the area right down to the bare linen, and then sealed it, primed it, and mixed a green ground that would match the original green Cui used to paint the back ground.
I like the spotlight effect and feel that the colored back ground gives the colors a bit more punch. I have been toying with the idea of using colored back grounds in a few future paintings, for me the issue is the function of the color I want it to make sense in relation to the other contextual elements.
This painting was a blast to work on and I hope Cui enjoys seeing the result, I hope I have complimented his vision.
The dimensions of the painting are 47"x39.5".
I am not sure what the title of this painting will be, I suggested that I submit a word and Cui submits a word, the combination of words will create the title, my word is Monsoon.

When I was in Beijing i kept my eyes open for street art and there is quite a bit around. Theres one guy who paints cotton plants everywhere, and another who paints kidney shaped creatures with big goobly eyes... Street arts going to grow and grow out there I think, as people are really up for new art which is kind of an expression of the new freedom that people are feeling out there. I exhibited an ink painting of a fat chairman mao panda out there and no government official came and banned it.
Phew.

Neither, I would say. I can't see anything political or stereotypical at all.
It does stand out like dog's balls amongst the other twee pieces. I love it.

"This is China": Bast, SPQR, Pure Evil, Josh Keyes, by RedStarPress on Dec 9, 2008 3:59:04 GMT 1, Hi all,
We loved the image so much that SPQR created a special edition of 5 canvases for the upcoming show. Each one is unique and hand stenciled. We will sell 3 on our website over the next couple of days.
We will list them here at random times.
P.S. the Preview will be coming out in 2 parts. Part 1 will be going out tomorrow night. The reason for breaking up the preview is that some of the pieces for the show are being held by Chinese customs. Ah, Communism...
