Shep... the consummate tool. Does everything he involves himself in need to commercialize street art? Still waiting to see one original idea, one piece of "art" worth putting on a wall, one glimmer of hope that he isn't the uncreative thieving profiteer that all the clues lead me to believe.

Consummate Tool?

Generally you make competent posts, but this one? What? Shep has been at it since 1989. He was the first "street artist" I was ever aware of in Los Angeles... with pieces I used to see on the way to junior high! He started his career a broke art school kid working at a skate shop who putting up his "Andre the Giant Has A Posse" stickers all over the East Coast - hardly some grand plan of "commercialism."

But clearly you don't understand Shepard's art. He calls himself a graphic fine artist. First and foremost, he considers himself a graphic artist - so marketing is inherent to his aesthetic - and he has always taken on graphic design commissions to pay for his fine art and street projects.

But his street and fine art projects, paradoxically, frequently subvert commercialism. If you ever watched the John Carpenter movie "They Live" which the "Obey" theme was taken from, its a commentary on advertising partly and how its a tool of social control.

His entire aesthetic is based on the subversion of advertising and marketing. Hence much of his imagery involves the repurposing of images - specifically tropes of Communist Propaganda. The uneducated would say that's "uncreative."

As for profiteering... Shep makes it very clear that he hopes to "Democratize Art" by keeping his print releases cheap. $40 for a S/N print?!?! That's "profiteering"?

He was arrested as recently as August for continuing his paster efforts. (hardly just an artist who's sitting back, resting on his laurels to get paid)

Shep gave the proceeds from several of his prints away to various liberal causes - Moveon.org, No on 8, the ACLU, the Obama campaign, etc. (Is that your definition of a "thieving profiteer?")

His accelerated releases schedule is partly due to the fact he is going blind due to diabetes - he had eye surgery.

Uncreative? Need I remind you how many firsts you can attribute to Shepard? He was the first artist to do an Obama print release - back when Obama was projected to lose to Hilary Clinton. He is to wheat pasters, what Blek Le Rat is to stenciling. Artists like Skullphone etc. pretty much clone Shepard's early career path.

Uncreative? He's one of the top 10 graphic design artists to ever live!?

The diss on him that he's a commercial self-promoter misunderstands street art... Of course he's a commercial self promoter, every street artist is!!! Every Tagger is! If you're not, you're a bad street artist - you're a gallery artist!

- The combination of propaganda images with pop art and commercial advertising is uncreative because it had been done before Shep took the idea and began claiming originality.

- It sure is. He purposely prices things lower than market to spur on a resale opportunity for the initial purchaser and forces a created market demand to drive his prints selling out instantly. That is the stepping stone to originals and swag such as t-shirts and hoodies. Creating demand is profiteering. Shep is the Wallmart of the art world... low priced high volume art.

- Fantastic promotion, assisting in his mystique. Just imagine how much it would have cost him in taking out adds to promote his art, VS all the free write ups for getting arrested (no jail, minimum fines).

- I don't care if he gives proceeds to anyone, it's self promotion and likely cheaper than he could otherwise advertise. Continuing to take images from other artists, and to call them his own by "repourposing" them is the work of a thief... selling those images as something new or creative is a profiteer.


- I fail to see how this was creative. He took an angle that was heavily based on Alberto Korda's photo of Che, and did Obama with it. What brilliance.


- He is a pirate of images and concepts, who is making loads of money by creating a market and mistaken view that he is talented.

its actually a warehouse sale, selling off the rest of this season's clothes, not really samples per say, but there are boxes of one offs....ive picked up jackets in the past never produced, GF picked up a wallet never made. otherwise, tshirts are usually $10, and 10 for $80....stuff like that.
