While I tend to agree with that general sentiment, I think it's pretty fair for an artist to set a minimum acceptable price on his/her own work. The alternative he has in this case, is to sell it through a gallery, so I'm sure the reserve level would still benefit the buyer, all things considered. And ultimately the cash goes exactly where we as art fans would probably want it to - to the artists.

I highly recommend this bar.. looks great as it is within a railway arch and very friendly bar staff. I had my 30th birthday there a few years ago.. ahh, the memories. Shame about the date though as I will most likely be the receipient of the hangover of the year award on Fri 5th following an event on the previous evening/night/wee hours, nevertheless I'll pop in to have a look around

Got some superb pieces from Neverwork this year, having been an admirer of his work since joining the forum. A few of the names on the line-up are new to me too, so that makes the prospect of seeing what they do more interesting. Do try to post a few pic's if you can please.

having not seen their works discussed on here before (apologies if it has been!) i felt this would be of interest to some members, i was first introduced to the boyle families art almost 10 years ago by a fellow artist and friend.

now, i always found the idea to be as appealing as the final product, the story goes a little like this.

basically one of the family members would throw a dart into a map of the world, they would then contact someone in the area the dart landed and ask them to repeat the dart throwing process on a local area map. the family would then travel to this location throw a large set square type thingy into the air and where ever this landed would be the start of the new work.

"Their aim continues to be to try & make art that does not exclude anything as a potential subject.Over the years, some of the subjects being: earth, air, fire and water; animals, vegetables and minerals; insects, reptiles and water creatures; human beings and societies. The media they have worked in have included: performances and events, films and projections, sound recordings, photography, electron-microphotography, drawing, assemblage, painting, sculpture and installation.



Their best known work, however, continues to be their Journey to the Surface of the Earth. Begun in 1964, this work encompasses many different series & projects including: the London Series, Tidal Series, Thaw Series, Japan Series & their lifelong project, the World Series. Each of these series has involved various random selection techniques to isolate a rectangle of the Earth's surface. In the case of the World Series 1000 random selections were made from a giant map of the world by blindfolded visitors to the exhibition at London's ICA in 1969.



The random selection serves several purposes: nothing is excluded as a potential subject; the particular is chosen as a representative of the whole & it reduces their subjective role as artists & creators to that of "presenters". To present a slice of reality as objectively & truthfully as possible. They call this "motiveless appraisal".

Once the random selection has been made, they recreate the site in a fixed and permanent form as a painted fibreglass relief. They recognise that each work is, in a sense, a failure. They know the selections can never be truly random and that it is impossible to eliminate themselves and their own subjective influences.

They attempt to present a slice of reality as they found it at the moment of selection. And yet, so much is left out. The world is not a fixed and permanent place. There are an infinite number of elements and factors that are constantly changing. No matter how good the recreation, it is still a recreation and only an approximation to reality. They know that it is impossible to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But they try to isolate and reduce the elements to see if it is possible to tell the truth about anything."

cheers ragnar, haven't actually attended any of their shows although i have seen a couple of works in the flesh so to speak, as doublehelix says they are awesome up close. tbh. i'm not sure if they are still producing works. linkd been a member for a while but i've been spending alot of time in the studio recently and haven't really been posting much for some time, glad you like your bundle of crap. lol.

apologies for being so quiet of late... spending too much time painting and neglecting everything else, lol. so i'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, sorry if it has...

cheers pud mate, glad you like... and yes very perceptive pete spot on, burned on an old electric hob, lol. on top of the burns i then added acrylic, spray paint, ink, varnish and gold dust, i'll post some close ups today as its difficult to see the details properly in that pic.
