Red uses Sotheby's auction to move upmarket
4 December 2008
The Aids charity (Product) Red is to organise a fundraising auction at Sotherby's in New York.
Red, famously backed by U2 frontman Bono, is hoping to raise up to ยฃ10 million through the sale of art work donated by artists such as Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Banksy.
Red supports the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a Swiss foundation championed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
However, the auction marks a change of direction for Red, which has previously focused on the sale of merchandise such as T-shirts and watches with commercial partners.
Red's Chief Executive, Susan Smith Ellis, told the Wall Street Journal the Valentine's Day auction is intended to change perceptions of the brand and take it more upmarket.
The brand needs "oxygen", she said.
Works donated to the auction include a medicine cabinet by Damien Hirst estimated at up to $7 million; a red balloon-animal sculpture by Jeff Koons and a Jasper Johns watercolor estimated at up to $600,000.
Other donors include the British artists Antony Gormley and Tracy Emin.
