Banksy - Print Number Query, by insite on Feb 21, 2008 15:26:13 GMT 1, Don't know about low numbers but I've got a trolleys #200 so they do give the round numbers out to mere mortals such as us.
While I'm on numbers I'm not that fussed but I do have "I am your father" and "Wotulookinat" both #7 which does please me for some reason ;D

Banksy - Print Number Query, by BK83 on Feb 21, 2008 19:37:09 GMT 1, I have a faile print which is number 3! i was well chuffed when i opened it up and first realised. Although having a banksy or other print because you like it is the main objective i guess i would like either a low or a multiple number. saying that i would never turn down a print because it wasn't! Please explain why? I'm not being funny, I just don't get it... (a) Why were you more chuffed to get a low number than any other? (b) Why is the "main objective" to get a low or multiple number?
Hey buddy,
It has to do with pricing in the long term. When and if an artist becomes quite big time the lower edition numbers become more valuable as do landmark numbers. 21, 100, 111, 200, 222, 300, 333, etc. after 1-10 the numbers become a little less meaningless with regards to price increases, but 1-10 can absolutely command higher prices -- and people are willing to pay!

21? 111? 222? 333? People honestly would want these more than others?
Do you have any stats or evidence to back this claim up? Just curious.

There are no facts to back this up -- merely that they become desirable because people like the numbers. as I said -- 1-10 can command higher prices due to their single digit status and the idea that these were the first to be printed....
the final # in an edition can also be desirable. although again no evidence to support this.

Dont know if its quite the same thing, but sets with matching numbers usually sell for more than the same prints out of sequence ( thinking of angel bombers and hewlet windows here). The days of having the oportunity to pick and choose print numbers looks to be over, usually I'm just thankfull I managed to get a print.

Banksy - Print Number Query, by They call me Stephen on Feb 21, 2008 21:36:37 GMT 1, No no no...Sorry for the confussion Manchester Mike....
meant to say that the 'main objective' would be to get a print i liked. A banksy for example, god knows actually getting your hands on one is hard enough! At that stage (buying) the number received means nothing and more than likely never would.
The only reason i was chuffed with my low print Faile was because it felt like I got one of the 'first' ones. Does that make any sense? I know its probably not the case at all but I know i'd feel like the nuts if I ever got a print 1 from someone who i really liked/admired.
Just to throw a curve ball into this discussion what do you guys think of artist proofs. Would they demand higher prices if signed? I've got a artist proof from Hayden kays for example which is signed in gold ink. The regular run was of 50 and signed in black ink. No potential flipper here, just curious as to what you guys think as i've always wondered.

Banksy - Print Number Query, by ร
gent รacardi on Feb 27, 2008 7:53:14 GMT 1, The thing about POW keeping some low-numbered prints for friends and VIPs isn't completely false. For instance, the first 50 of the LA prints (sold during Banksy's show in LA a couple years back) were reserved for such a purpose, and of those 50, those that weren't given away went for sale during the POW release months later. Of course, I'm sure that's not a standard practice, so it's extremely variable at best.
Still, while having a low number or a high number has no impact on a print's desirability (and hence - and I shudder to say - value), it's not uncommon to see sellers bigging it up. There's also a 'fun' factor that buyers or sellers may attach artificial value to (e.g., '666', '69', three-of-a-kind numbers, multiples of 100's, the last print '100/100', etc.). But at the end of the day, it's 'po-tay-to', 'po-tah-to'.
And quite frankly, I have never met anyone who's pronounced it 'po-tah-to'. But that's besides the point.
