Like I said, they looked incredible when I walked in but when you got up close, seemed to miss some texture, would have expected them to be at least hand finished. The prints are amazing on an A3 format but being that huge, they missed a little something, but thats only my opinion. Ye, looked like lots had sold so congrats to all

The prints are amazing on an A3 format but being that huge, they missed a little something, but thats only my opinion. Ye, looked like lots had sold so congrats to all So is quality not good up close? If you made purchase based on online pics alone, would you think you'd feel disappointed in quality when you actually see in person? Curious how these digital images always come out. Similar to Jason Thielke, almost bought one of his until I found out it was just a digital image.
When I heard about the ultrachrome digital image for these, I thought it may have been just a print out as well, but assumed at that price point it would be super clear and almost staring at a hand painted piece. Someone mentioned before there are hand drawn elements on the pieces itself, is there anything hand painted or drawn from what you guys saw or just the "hand-varnished" element??
but then, i guess that price is what some prints go for themselves. Images still look great themselves though!

Not sure where the 'hand-finishing' thing comes from. We have never described them as such. Chinese whispering going on here. They are 'hand-varnished'. None of Russ' digital canvases have any hand finishing. He has in the past painted on canvas of course, but these are in a very different style. The freedom and fantasy he achieves digitally is amazing and the quality of the works in the show is first class and they have an extremely crisp finish.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. They're selling like hot cakes.

Sorry you're wrong there. We spent a long time deciding and agreeing with Russ how they should be described before the preview were sent out.

Russ Mills ๐ฌ๐ง Byroglyphics โข New Paintings , by jusdeep on May 22, 2009 20:54:03 GMT 1, I really don't want to get into an argument over this because it doesn't bother me in the slightest as I was not purchasing work (this time). As I said in my previous post the works and sales of said works speak volumes. Maybe the phrasing was misleading, maybe myself and other members of the forum cannot read English, all I know is that there was deifinitely mention of hand finishing in the original buyers preview list. Let's leave it at that and just enjoy Russ' great work. peace

As did I... I think the miscommunication is in the "hand-varnished"... tbh, when I first read that description I thought that was referring to some sort of hand detail on the piece.. perhaps next time just say the works are varnished as I'm not sure how else to you could varnsh other than by hand?
Anyway, has anyone else gone to the show and have actual pics of the exhibition?

I think your right the computer is a tool, I use a computer for most of my compositions now as probably most Artists do these days. BUT then I draw them in an original form whether it be Stencil, Paint, or drawing
I think theres a stigma of Digital Art, and rightly so, alot of digital artists use alot of filters and programmes to do there work. Cos of this it is give it a bad name, as they are doing stuff at the touch of a button.
I have been drawing on a computer for twenty years, and think there's nowt wrong with it, as long asโฆ Use a mouse as a pencil or brush to create an image Definately don't use any fancy filters. Conventially hand draw or paint an image and arrange it or enhance it in photoshop.

To clarify. Russ hand-draws and paints much of his material, then scans them into his computer. He collages these elements digitally to make the stunning and beautiful results we see. As Jfury says, this is how he has always worked - apart from the relatively few acrylic paintings he has done in the past.

suppose i shouldn't be - just think less of of the sources .. thats ol.
FUD = bad HYPE = bad
let the work speak for itself - not anyone else ! pretty simple really KISS not SNAFU

Russ Mills ๐ฌ๐ง Byroglyphics โข New Paintings , by Standard on May 23, 2009 20:28:36 GMT 1, I don't understand the fuss?
Would it be more artistic if he cut out a cardboard stencil and rattle canned his work? Is there such a skill difference between the results? The work that Russ produces is fresh, very sharp, distinctive and is simply using the tools of the times, rather nicely I may add.
Are we not at risk of falling foul of the same stuff that the blinkered critics of Banksy harp on about? Do we question why Banksy uses a rattle can and a cardboard cut out over how Matisse skillfully used paint on the tip of a brush? If the end results are pleasant and approving to the eye, why the hell question how the artist got to the result?
If you don't like it don't buy it, if you do then do......! Some people go crazy over a simple but effective stencil that is reproduced in print but then pull faces at an artist who uses a Mac, biro ink, paint, digital manipulation and then prints the result on an 1 of 1 canvas!!!!!! Not to mention that he throws out a very small run of his prints for ยฃ25!!
If Banksy started releasing prints that where completely of digital origin you lot would be tripping over each other.
step out of the box.
