DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by Wearology on Sept 9, 2009 12:55:31 GMT 1, I have already formed my opinion as to which piece I am going to try and purchase this weekend. I was trying to see what you guys thought about the pieces. I believe the reason that street artists continue to tag the streets even when they have become rich and famous is for the same reason actors who become rich and famous still do the theatre - if you stop fine tuning what got you there than it will eventually go stale and fade away.

DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by Happy Shopper on Sept 9, 2009 13:12:00 GMT 1, Much better work than I expected. The prices are OK, but there's a lot of it. Which puts me off a bit. The worst pieces IMO are the most expensive... and the print! That Punk Queen image is so lazy.

DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by robinbanks on Sept 9, 2009 13:50:29 GMT 1, i think sometimes people forget that dface has his history based in illustration and design, i would not really refer to him as an artist. I think he would readily admit that as well. "AM: I think I consider you as a pop artist more than a street artist, but Iโm interested to know how you view yourself DF: I just consider myself an artist"
Haha - that is classic JBOY!!! ;D

Isnt that the whole point behind his work? I mean, it's (i wont use "rip off" ) a homage almost to warhol? I think it works great.
EDIT: Although it does seem like he should of done it a while back rather than now.

How about buying 9 D*Face PopTart prints, and get them framed up with differnet coloured tinted glass Cheaper than the canvas! ;D

Everything else seems a tad trite. Nothing seems fresh. The only piece I would hang on my wall (except aforementioned pieces) is 'Longer Lasting Sex.'

The queens are probably a bit too big for most people maybe at about 50cm x 50cm they would have been easier for people to display.

DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by monkeyballs on Sept 9, 2009 23:35:20 GMT 1, I guess you either love his work or hate it. I think a lot of people miss the actual point of his work. He defaces (clues in the name) / reappropriates / subverts...call it what you will, iconic images from the past and the modern day to create something new that sums up the world we all live in at this moment. Whilst 'eyecons' focused upon the modern worlds fascination with celebrity and fame, 'aPOPcalypse now' was very much about the fall from grace of America and the old ideals of the 20th century, 'Ludovico Aversion Therapy / All Your Dreams Belong To Us' seems focused very much on the idea of advertising and consumer culture of the 21st century. All of these are issues that you hear about / are bombarded with on a daily basis. People may call it 'ripping off' other artists work, but he does it for a reason - there always seems to be some sort of meaning behind the work that some people fail to see โ or are not willing to see beyond the initial work. I find a lot of folks find it hard to see any 'emotion' in the work. I guess D* doesn't leave part of his soul in the work like Bacon, Picasso or even Micallef or Neate. But I guess that's not what he's about. His work is very clean and clinical โ probably something to do with him being a graphic designer in the past, the notions of living a life where everything is perfect. People also forget that it's only really been 3 years since his first show at Stolen Space in October 2006. Since than he has had 3 very different exhibitons. People need to remember that it is still very much early stages for a lot of artists in this 'scene'. D* probably has a good 30++ years of creating art if he chooses to do so. So for those who are expecting massive strides forward in a space of year, I guess you maybe disappointed. I think the big colour pieces from the show are excellent. However a lot of the HMP seem rather poor. Nonetheless I think overall the exhibition is excellent and a good platform for his next American show which should be in LA, โlike LA. Itโs everything my work is โantiโ embodied in a city. Lala land โ that name fits it brilliantly. So Iโm looking forward to LAโ.
Without soul, what value is left? Current work is no better than a promotional poster for tourism. Not much to see here, time for D to find his soul again, cos it used to be there on the stickers, mouldings and paste ups, but I now agree that theme has overtaken feeling.
I also agree its early days, but in his interviews, every one of them, he talks only of the time when he was working in a job he did not love putting out stickers to fulfill a passion. He needs to find that once more, cos at the moment, its looking like a job again. I have little doubt he will as the white room in apocolypse now was amazing. Less concept, more feeling.

DFace - New York - 12th Sept - 10th Oct, by Daniel Silk on Sept 9, 2009 23:45:05 GMT 1, I see where your coming from I just think D*Face's work is really unlike most of the other artists talked about on here. I still think Obey is the best comparison, as its a bit more like a brand than an artistic style, and I don't mean that in a bad way. He's come from an area of design with Skateboards and kidrobot, so its not ya ruff and ready graffiti art.
