D*Face Riot Print, by marwood on Dec 10, 2009 18:34:35 GMT 1, Well went and gone and did it too - got a Hand Finished one despite as someone else said the "Buy Now" not appearing on the "Prints for Sale" page (by chance went back to the home page and there it was!!). Jammily managed to grab one though still undecided about which one I prefer - really like the bright red of the normal ed. but sure the hand finished will look great (he said... hopefully!)
Bet I get lucky in the Banksy draw now too.... law of the sod... not that I've ever won a lottery thing before but now would be typical! Oh well Xmas prezzie to self. Poor old bank account.....

D*Face Riot Print, by Deleted on Dec 10, 2009 18:51:09 GMT 1, I don't see what this print has to do with a riot, besides that it is written on it.
It's a clean, photoshop-like print, the flames are like the ones on sweaters you can buy by cheap markets stands (the same that sell the black and white tribal shirts).. The link between coke and a riot is very blurry..... do we need to drink Dface to have a Riot? What is the point?
wha.. Glad for those who like it still have the chance to buy it. (hand-aged sold out I think). hopefully you will get the print in time and in great condition.
peace

At least that would have been my argument while discussing this piece during critique day in one of my old college courses.

I agree with you, and I think you described nicely, that is the meaning of the print.
But.
Because this is art, there is also the aesthetic part of the message, the aesthetics don't correlate to the message.. at least I don't read them. A message like that feels like a more raw, intense image. That could be personal of course.
Another question that rises now to me is how new is the message of the print? Did it fill a gap? Where any new art techniques or views used to bring this message.. and this is not the best way to describe it, but was there any 'need' for this print..
I'm not bashing the print, don't get me wrong.. I like discussions about art I don't completely get.. This forum could use some more discussions like that I think.

D*Face Riot Print, by Drymounted on Dec 10, 2009 22:01:59 GMT 1, Actually on closer inspection, it's not just flames coming out randomly, but the wick makes it a Molotov Cocktail. That makes my previous statement flawed.
I still stick to: Coke = Big Business, corporate...signifies conformity
But the Molotov Cocktail now makes me view it as a non-conformist spoof on a classic conformist advertising campaign . With propaganda being what it is, it is asking the common brainwashed person do something out of the box, and convincing them to do so by using advertising trickery that has been used to thwart people into buying billions of a single product.
Essentially, it is turning the positive mass marketed message into an anarchist ideal using the comfortable branding that has already been established.
Sometimes the easiest way to convince people to follow your belief, is to use an already successful marketing campaign to do so...by just adding a twist.
Is the message new? Not at all. But then we must ask ourselves what the artist wants us to riot for? Is it in the context of street art, taxes, government, etc? Is he wanting physical confrontations, or just asking us to fight mentally against conformity and the ideal of mass marketing and big business?
Things that make you go hmm..... Now this is what makes art so fun!

D*Face Riot Print, by Deleted on Dec 10, 2009 22:32:38 GMT 1, wow! that's a new view for me, I never saw the bottle as a molotov. That makes me think that maybe he's poining out that he, Dface (as the bottle says) is the fuel for the riot.
thanks for you constructive arguments. I still think the aesthetics don't match the message, but it helped me understanding the piece.

As much as talking about a piece is interesting...it doesn't take a genius to see it's a molotov cocktail. WOW! (oh...and I think the bottle is a coke bottle) ;D
