Mr. Brainwash โข Liberty Print, by Drymounted on Mar 9, 2010 22:58:06 GMT 1, Hand finished, 12 color MBW print for $200... not bad if you ask me. Like this much more than the Wall- which allegedly was a 'six color screen print' for $150. Furthermore, when you add up all the different Wall colors, the edition size is the same. ? ? ? fair enough if your think those two pieces suck but at least they can both be easily attributed to an artist due to their distinctive styles, this liberty piece could literally be by anyone which is why it cant even begin to be considered 'good art'
Good art is something that evokes emotion, be it positive or negative. This print seems to have served it's purpose.
Funny thing is that if this were created by anybody but MBW, nobody would be bashing this. If it were signed by Banksy, we'd see a whole other set of responses. Art is less about execution, and more about context.

Mr. Brainwash โข Liberty Print, by monkeyart on Mar 9, 2010 23:14:02 GMT 1, I was chatting about me going to watch the Exit film today with some of my work mates, they asked whats it about... I struggled to explain its about a french guy with lots of money and very little talent for either art or movie making, they didn't really get what I was saying until they googled MBW art, they just laughed, saying this looks like a 6 form art project... I have to admit most have art degrees but even the accountant thought it was shite, now thanks ironic :-)

the ''evokes emotion'' argument (on top of being a massive cliche) applies more to pieces like the bast above than work by brainwash, which is bad simply because its so basic/derivative... in reality it provokes no emotion whatsoever, and the anger you see is more directed at the entire MBW situation than the image itself
the second point is moot given that banksy wouldnt release work of this standard

Mr. Brainwash โข Liberty Print, by BK83 on Mar 10, 2010 0:02:02 GMT 1, Art is. Period. It does not need to provoke emotion. It does not need to provoke, to emanate, nor to create. It does not need to BE any more than what it is. And yet, it can simultaneously do all this and more. This concept has been challenged rigorously in the art world. Particularly in the contemporary art movement.
I think the argument over whether MBW produces art is moot. It is obviously art; What you're debating is taste and semantics.
Regardless of opinion, the work will sell out because there is a machine involved in the financial well-being of investors who have backed MBW. Love it or leave it.

Mr. Brainwash โข Liberty Print, by Drymounted on Mar 10, 2010 1:12:29 GMT 1, 'Good art is something that evokes emotion, be it positive or negative. This print seems to have served it's purpose' how is saying something is s**t and not worth the paper its made on evoking emotion? its just a statement. Simple enough...If you dislike something, take a pass from commenting in a message board thread about the piece. If you feel it's worthy enough to take the time to reply, it's evoked emotion. I don't waste time commenting on work that I don't fancy. I just move on.
Nah... If you think every Banksy piece is a homerun, then you too are brainwashed. We all love Banksy and it's the common-ground of this board, but he's not the end-all be-all of the art world. He too has put out a few duds, and has stepped on the toes of a few artists.
It's art...It's subjective. I just don't see why detractors are so passionate about taking the piss out of his collectors more than the collectors of any other artist. Some of us enjoy 'crap', and most here don't. We can all agree to disagree, but this "my artist is better than your artist" argument is a bit tiresome.
Anyway, cyber-beers all around!

You really couldn't tell that this was a 'MBW print' by looking at it? Furthermore, sticking up for the Shepard Fairey- Johnny Cash print (and keep in mind that I'm a Fairey fan) when Johnny Cash actually resembles the Sloth from Goonies as opposed to Johnny Cash is pretty funny. Sure, you can tell that it is a Shepard Fairey print due to the "distinctive style", however, unfortunately you can't tell that it is Johnny Cash. It would be like if the Statue of Liberty print more resembled Jim Varney than it did the Statue of Liberty...

Mr. Brainwash โข Liberty Print, by kjzimm on Mar 10, 2010 5:08:44 GMT 1, Don't know what to think about MBW as I'm not that familiar with his work. It has never grabbed my attention.
But, as a Frenchman, he has a little more cred with a Lady Liberty than other artists. He was a little slow out of the gate and short of ideas on this print.
I value my money as much as anyone, but it would almost be worth $200 to see what this guy puts out. I bought a Shep print for something like $45 last summer and felt I was ripped off because of the quality of the litho. But, I felt the same way going into that purchase--I wanted to see what he could produce. I'm done with Fairey.
Personally, this Liberty print doesn't suck. But, is that really a reason to buy? Guess I know the answer.

Warhol *Statue of Liberty 1986
Andys' first Liberty was in 1963, He created many through the years. The above piece was one of the last, if not the last.

I find that all three, BAST Shep, and Beejoir all have their own style, MBW is just another generic cliche ridded business head making a quick buck off the back of his association with a great artist.
