In December, Black Book Gallery will hold an exhibition called True Brits, featuring a set of three akin artists, all from the UK: Dan Baldwin, Dale Grimshaw and Jonathan Darby. Alone, each artist stands their own ground (all three are well-sought after and have shown internationally), but taken together under one roof, this exhibit will represent an explosion of talent for Denver viewers.

Signal Gallery in London represents each of the artists and has played a central role in their individual careers. Both Grimshaw and Darby held their first solo shows at Signal Gallery, which has led to subsequent successes and showings.



Elements that bring this group of artists together (other than their locale) can be found in the content of their work, which possesses certain dark qualities, as well as an affinity for layering. However dark, the execution of the work is grounded in strong technique, which applies to all three artists. Baldwin, Grimshaw and Darby are all formally art-educated. Baldwin studied illustration and communication, which is effectively present in his mixed media pieces. Layers of media, including the incorporation of real objects, make up collaged compositions that reveal streams of consciousness on the subjects of innocence, life, death, beauty, love, politics and decay. Grimshaw also employs a collage technique, but in a more confined and intentional manner, where subjects are often layered, both literally and figuratively. Working mostly in oil and spray paint on canvas, Grimshaw draws strong emotion into his subjects and overall work. For Darby, emotion and figurative drawing comprise the central foundation of his art. Darby says he “has always been absolutely obsessed with drawing the human face” and that he has “such a strong impulse to portray human emotion and life,” which is layered by nature. Almost always, Darby is making a statement of socio-political proportions.

News from Dan Baldwin -

Just to let you know after 5 years and almost 30 editions with Harwood King printmakers I have left and an now exclusively launching new editions with Coriander/CCA Galleries (Peter Blake/Damien Hirst ) in Aprils London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy.

these will be 30 layered silkscreens with diamond dust and all the extras, and bound to be the best I have ever produced being that they are pure silkscreen.

Also working towards Coates and Scarry's group show MODERN FABULISTS in April in Bristol..

I always the Harwood King prints were quality, it will be interesting to see what the new prints will be like.

While ago bought a Dan Baldwin ap called politics.

Really like it and surprised do not see more about him on here.

Could be not classed as Urban but think he is.
