Banksy FILM POSTER 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', by rowan on Feb 8, 2010 17:26:14 GMT 1, I cant believe people would be willing to pay such a high price for these?... Am i missing something here?
I'll get my brother back in the UK to nip into our local art house cinema and pinch one off the wall! (its what Banksy would have wanted).. Heck they might even just give me one.. Well thats if it'll be shown, i doubt.

You have to remember that these will appeal to both collectors of Cinema quad posters and Banksy collectors alike (both huge markets). It will also only be produced initially in very small numbers and the film will probably only be shown in a very small proportion of cinema's nationwide. Even if the quads are released they will probably be different to the preview release as this is the norm. Cinema posters for festivals such as Sundance, Cannes etc usually are creditless or differ from the finished article. I had the chance to purchase one of the quad's and turned it down as I wasn't prepared to take the risk and then find out a month down the line POW selling them for a tenner, but make your own mind up.

Banksy FILM POSTER 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', by Agent Provocateur on Feb 8, 2010 19:29:43 GMT 1, Okey doky, prepare for some nerdy film poster information. I just cobbled this lot together from various quality movie poster sites.
If you'd like to know more probably the best to look at is www.learnaboutmovieposters.com.
-
Teaser Poster This term is often used interchangeably with 'Advance'. All teaser posters are advances, but not all advances are teasers. A teaser poster will not have any credits and may not even have the film's title.
Advance poster Usually issued several months prior to the release of the movie. An Advance poster usually has entirely different artwork than the regular poster.
Character Advance Poster Similar to 'teasers'. These posters are advance posters featuring a single character from an upcoming film.
Regular poster This term is usually applied when a poster with credits follows the release of an advance or teaser poster. Unless "Advance" or "Teaser" are applied, it is assumed that a one sheet has full credits.
British Quads Quads are horizontal posters approximately 40" wide by 30" high (The exact dimensions can sometimes vary). Quads can be printed on glossy or matte finish stock. All Quads are Unfolded and are shipped in tubes.
Double sided posters Studios produce both single-sided and double-sided posters. The single-sided posters have printing only on the front side with a white backside, while double-sided posters have the same artwork on the front and backside. The artwork on the back is reversed (in lighter shading). Double-sided posters are normally printed on a thicker paper than are the single-sided version (not sure that is still the case with UK Quads). These posters are displayed in 'light boxes'. Because of the reverse artwork on the back, the double-sided printing gives a more life-like look to the poster when a light is placed behind it.
The doubled-sided poster is the result of a very expensive printing process which involves running the initial negative through at normal color intensity. The poster is then reversed and run back through the presses at a reduced color indensity, such as 30% to 40% of the initial color. This is why the artwork on the front is more colorful and detailed than the reverse print on the back.
Doubled-sided posters are extremely popular with many collectors of newer materials. In fact, because of the increase in good quality reprints, some collectors will ONLY collect posters that are double-sided, if available, and will pass on single-sided versions.
-
Imo this version is an 'Advance' Double Sided UK Quad
Just in case anyone was interested ;D

Banksy FILM POSTER 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', by Agent Provocateur on Feb 12, 2010 17:24:10 GMT 1, Someone just pointed this out to me after I mentioned all these new posters had '13 MENTAL AGE' rather than the '12' that is on the original Quad.
Notice the '12' version matches the official BBFC logo exactly and the new '13' version uses a different typeface for the numbers.
The original '12' poster for 'Exit...'
Which matches the official logo, notice the same typeface for the '12'
And the new '13' version that uses a different typeface for the numbers (note the change in the '1')
The speculation is that BBFC weren't keen on their logo being subverted with the 'MENTAL AGE' tag so the '13' version was designed from scratch. Another thing I didn't know but was told, in the UK we have the '12' certificate but not a '13' one, that I think is used in the US.
Remember tho this is pure conspiracy theory territory... bit of a slow afternoon too

Banksy FILM POSTER 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', by Scraffer on Feb 16, 2010 23:01:07 GMT 1, Revolver are refusing to give any away. And the Gate cinema in Notting Hill said that the posters were "property of the distributor and had to be returned after use".... What a load of rubbish; my local Odeon has given me loads of Quads once they've been used.....
Btw, those ones on the tube look pretty hard to tear down in one piece.

It does sound a bit strange I mean are the cinemas being extra strict coz they have been told to be? or is this normal

Banksy FILM POSTER 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', by Agent Provocateur on Feb 19, 2010 11:50:06 GMT 1, Silky, I don't think it's that strange, original cinema movie posters have never been a commercial thing, they are only printed to show in the cinemas. In the past tho some huge films have released a version on their fan club site or something similar, but this is not the norm (and invariably they differ slightly, paper, size and sometimes additional info. like who printed it).
Star wars is the best example, when episodes 1-3 were released I think the posters were sent out with the express instructions that they must be returned or the cinema wouldn't get the next film. I think this was probably a purely commercial thing tho as they released a version of each poster on their fan club site, not entirely sure but there were distinct differences compared to the original cinema poster.
Another thing distributers have done quite frequently in the past is have a legal line at the bottom of the posters stating 'This is the property of xxxxxxxxxx and should not be resold' (or something very similar!).
On the 'Exit...' poster and the tight control of them it could be a combination of things. Banksy is probably very aware that anything not nailed down that is associated with him will get a commercial value and because it's pure advertising he may not want them to be available. It's also possible that with all the rating's changes, from '12', to '13' and now the film being a 15, the distributors could have been asked to get the posters back that played around with the official '12' logo.
Well done on getting a bus shelter version freerange. I was told last week they were much harder to get since the first Spiderman movie as they started putting bar codes on the reverse of each one so they could scan in the location and the poster.
Not sure if that answers your question silky... seem to have rambled as usual!

Banksy FILM POSTER 'Exit Through the Gift Shop', by Happy Shopper on Feb 19, 2010 12:24:42 GMT 1, I sent an email to CBS Outdoor, the people who put them up on the Underground, and was told they have been asked specifically by the distributer to return all unused posters! Buggers. So it's not just the cinemas who have been given special orders on these posters. Probably Pest Control keeping track of them.
