Urban/Contemp. Auction Weds 21st April ..Going?, by nigelbgg on Apr 18, 2010 18:15:43 GMT 1, Pretty gross how almost all of those pieces are less than 3 years old, with a fair chunk being painted over the past 4 MONTHS!!!
Submitted by the artists, that always makes me shake my head as well.
I'll be bidding on that huge Micallef.

almost every gallery show you have ever been to has been full of work sumitted by the artist has it not ? Id rather see submitted by artist than 'submitted by profiteering capitalist who bought for pennies from the artist a few months ago and now hopes to make a tidy profit for themselves'
actually - ive got my eye on at least four pieces in this auction so - YEAH , its crap , i advise no-one goes along or bids online .

On one hand, it says to me that perhaps some people (including some artists) in the "urban" field are not optimistic about the future of the field and worry the value of the pieces may go down quickly after the initial hype surrounding the new works. Some of the lots are unsold items from recent exhibitions/releases.
On the other hand, I think this auction is a different channel for the artists/galleries to present their works to an audience who might not be otherwise familiar with some of the names. A great promotional opportunity to reach a different group of collectors!
On balance, I think it's a +ve!!

Urban/Contemp. Auction Weds 21st April ..Going?, by nigelbgg on Apr 18, 2010 21:55:34 GMT 1, I also think a lot of artists don't understand how auction history and values work, they often think quite short term with their hype/bidding up of/fixing of auction prices, instead of a natural curve based on their talent and career.
So many will crash to the floor when the penny drops.
Those with the gradual rise, consistent history, and solid supportive client base will be left standing.

Urban/Contemp. Auction Weds 21st April ..Going?, by krypto on Apr 18, 2010 22:55:34 GMT 1, i really dont see why you feel its different to putting work into any other group show?
'auction history'? auctions dont exist on some sort of pedastal up above gallery shows and private sales ? do they? maybe f you are talking about sothebys, philip de pury or christies etc then yeah , there is some 'cache' .. Dreweatt imo is just levelling the playing field, its your working mans auction!
still like i said , im there bidding - so , yep , its a pile of steaming horse shit and please everyone do me a favour and avoid this sale like the plague .

Urban/Contemp. Auction Weds 21st April ..Going?, by aspyhole on Apr 18, 2010 23:09:28 GMT 1, HORRENDOUS collection of artwork. Almost NONE of the pieces deserve to be "up at auction".
Pretty clear where half of that stuff has come from too...doesn't make a difference, but just saying.

Urban/Contemp. Auction Weds 21st April ..Going?, by Scraffer on Apr 18, 2010 23:48:37 GMT 1, Krypto - "Poor Mans Auction"?!?! They should be just as respected as the others, as they're the 4th biggest auction house in the world, operating in 3 countries...!
They also have some cool urban stuff in other print sales which never really gets publicised on here that much.....
Should be a good auction all in all, and I hope to be at the auction....

I never said 'poor mans auction' .. i said 'Working mans auction' BIG difference! I respect them more than the others i mention (christies, philips de pury, sothebys) , the big boys are just playgrounds of the despicably rich. I would say Dreweatt are keeping it real.
As i said ... im looking forward to it , hoping for a bargain or two ! ended up with some real crackers from the 'get dring mobile' auction they hosted
