Audrey Kawasaki ๐บ๐ธ New Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by raiden on Nov 19, 2008 0:09:03 GMT 1, Audrey is a really great artist and a sweet girl. Got to meet her at her show (where she had two prints for $50, much more like it)
Still $220 for a giclee? Steep.
She is really, really huge in LA and the US. Pop surrealism really hasn't had much penetration in Europe. But I really can't see how people can justify those prices given that she's 26 and releasing a lot of work. I think she's a bit faddish, but she's very shrewd and I think she'll hit additional price peaks.
Mid size originals priced at $8K on wood go almost immediately.
She still has the Jonathan Levine Gallery show in 2010!
(its good to see pop surrealists get mentioned on the board once in a while.)

Audrey Kawasaki ๐บ๐ธ New Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by raiden on Nov 19, 2008 1:19:37 GMT 1, It funny, most people fall into either the Amy Sol or the Audrey Kawasaki category. I find Amy too be too cutesy and Anime for my taste - but I appreciate her talent.
The pop surrealist world seems so much more personal taste driven than the urban art world - where street stature, what is being said in the work, and mastery of set techniques (i.e. stenciling) seem to be driving factors.
In a sense, urban art seems easier to judge and assign relative values to because of those reasons - not to say that as art, it isn't highly subjective in aesthetic valuation - only to say that there are more "objective" value judgements governing "urban" art versus pop surrealism.

Audrey Kawasaki ๐บ๐ธ New Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Heavyconsumer on Nov 19, 2008 2:48:21 GMT 1, It funny, most people fall into either the Amy Sol or the Audrey Kawasaki category. Could it be because many of us (myself included) may perhaps have much more simplistic means of aesthetic evaluation than in the "fine art" environment? E.g. I find it difficult to appreciate much of what I read written by professional critics about certain art. I'm pretty literate, but half the time I've no idea what they're on about and I'm happy to look at an abstract work for example and just decide what my own response to it is, without worrying about what it may mean, or even why I do or don't like it too much!
Perhaps also because so very many of the people in and around this forum and the wider "urban/street art" scene, were drawn to it because they thought there might be something in it for them (profits derived from rapid price rises of affordable and available works by Banksy, DFace and others), as opposed to those who genuinely seek to appreciate art? Surely this could account for both the rapid boom/bust cycle price trends and the sheep mentality that seems to correlate closely with those price trends.?
It doesn't much matter to me, just hypothesising. I'm not knowledgable to comment on the pop surrealist world or the broader art establishment, so my perspective comes from here, which has indirectly opened me up the art at large. It is very much my starting point as a novice collector. It just so happens that many of my favourite artists have no ties or minimal ties to "street art," although I am a huge fan of Neate, Choe and Banksy.

Audrey Kawasaki ๐บ๐ธ New Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by raiden on Dec 3, 2008 6:56:27 GMT 1, Doesn't have to be 10,000 if they have it priced right!
Lets take a Bansky image, say "S&S."
The demand is dictated by us - the aggregate of Banksy collectors - what we are willing or can pay for a Banksy - and we all know our limit.
Now take supply for "S&S" which was an edition of 500.
Obviously, demand for "S&S" at ยฃ525.00 was greater than the 500 ed.
But what if S&S was ยฃ1,000.00? What if it was ยฃ2,000.00? At some point, the demand for a Bansky at that price is less than the edition size.
BUT The KEY IS THIS....
Part of the valuation of art is determined by the perceived future supply and demand value!
I never bought the Unlimited run Banksy, partly because anyone could have! Plus, no one would buy a Banksy from POW if they knew they could buy THE SAME print cheaper on Ebay later (assuming authentication and what not)
The brilliance of Audrey's approach is that you can't be sure if Audrey's print is going to have significant enough of a secondary market value.
Sure, 10,000 of us bum rush POW when we know that it will cost ยฃ3,000 for Banksy's "Nola" print later, but would anyone buy a Banksy print if you knew you could buy it cheaper tomorrow???
But turn the tables, if the Banksy was ยฃ3,000 and released with this same 1 hour signing window. Talk about big decisions for flippers! How many people would go for that deal?
***gasp*** You'd actually have to assess a Banksy for whether the image would become more and more popular overtime to determine if it was worth it!
And don't forget about economic's substitution effect! Why pay ยฃ3K for a print when you can get a S/N Moron's with a lower edition for nearly the same price?
I would say that at ยฃ3K, Banksy would sell around 350 prints under this pricing structure. (essentially market equilibrium for 'Nola')
At ยฃ2K, maybe 2,000, for a strong piece.
Honestly, you could probably use econometrics to draft a pretty good market projections based on past releases to figure out what the equilibrium point would be for an unlimited edition for limited time.
I will say also the size of Banksy's market for a print release is partly determined also by imperfect information...
Even if hypothetically Mr. B dropped a similar S/N unlimited ed for just ยฃ1 for a window of 10 minutes, I'd be surprised if the total sales topped 12,000 (assuming POW works perfectly) because many people wouldn't hear about it in time.
Really, how many Banksy fans are ACTIVELY trying to score a print of his out there? Maybe 15,000? How many are obsessively trying to score a Banksy print such that they're glued to their computers enough to take advantage of a random drop, 10 minute window, price at ยฃ550? 1,500?

So what...they are a business and are making money on each sold. It would be in their interest to "have to print" a lot. It should be seen as profit and revenue and not a chore.

That whole post is just money, money, money.
In my opinion there are 2 determining factors when buying a print.
1. Do I like it?
2. Can I afford it?
Stick to that and who gives a flying fuck what some spotty economist future projections are?

Plus, no one would buy a Banksy from POW if they knew they could buy THE SAME print cheaper on Ebay later (assuming authentication and what not) The brilliance of Audrey's approach is that you can't be sure if Audrey's print is going to have significant enough of a secondary market value. (essentially market equilibrium for 'Nola') At ยฃ2K, maybe 2,000, for a strong piece. 1,500? That whole post is just money, money, money. In my opinion there are 2 determining factors when buying a print. 1. Do I like it? 2. Can I afford it? Stick to that and who gives a flying fuck what some spotty economist future projections are?

Audrey Kawasaki ๐บ๐ธ New Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by goffy on Dec 3, 2008 10:44:53 GMT 1, Why are some people so insistant that that POW price most people out of buying a Banksy. I have never flipped anything in my life but I would not pay ยฃ3000 for a Banksy print for the same reason that I don't buy them from Ebay, I can't afford that price. That is not what Banksy or POW are about. POW should keep doing what they are doing and ignore the idiots who want to out price the people who cannot afford huge prices. It says nothing about Banksy fans but more about people with money.
