Mark Ryden ๐บ๐ธ Lowbrow Art โข Pop Surrealism โข New Release, by jamesreeve5 on Feb 12, 2008 22:39:08 GMT 1, American art is still in its infantsy, hence you get very few american artworks in the top auctions, just look through Southeby's, Bonhams, Christies, and see how many actually come up, most being , British and European, give it a hundred years or so and perhaps our colonial friends may have something to shout about. I personally love some of the American artists around at the moment, the odd one or two I would happily purchase.
huh? I am confused here... have you heard of the Ab-Ex movement? The Pop art movement? The majority of photography? Were you around in the 80's? been to a post-war art auction lately?

You've got be kidding me. America started the whole graffiti/urban art scene. Banksy/Adam Neate would be NOTHING without the founders in NYC. Maybe you've forgotten about these few small time artists who never command any serious prices at auction.
Jeff Koons BASQUIAT Haring Warhol Matthew Barney Kara Walker Dana Schutz
Just to name a few.

I've only dappled in the genre, but it seems like it can engulf you pretty quickly, I guess those kind of prices prove it.
Other than the fact that you picked me to quote and mock, I have to agree with the overall point of your thread. I'd give you a +1 if I could.

Mark Ryden ๐บ๐ธ Lowbrow Art โข Pop Surrealism โข New Release, by bonesy on Feb 12, 2008 23:16:07 GMT 1, Who is this guy? His stuff looks pretty decent. He has potential.
Really is a very funny post. Even if you havent heard of Mark or arent aware of his work just by looking at it you should tell he has a little more than "potential". Id say its safe to say he may even be "talented".
I have a Creatrix from the original release 3-4 years ago maybe? Its a beautiful image and definetly a permanent piece in the collection.
I flew out to LA for Mark Ryden's Tree Show opening last year and the work was ridiculous in person. The year before I flew out to the Banksy LA show and while it was great to see/ experience the show seeing Ryden's painting detail in person was uncomparably the more amazing of the 2.

I would argue the contrary - An artist whose works are all ending up at auction so early in his career speaks to the fact that a smaller percentage of the people buying his works are buying to keep, and rather are just speculating.
The less of a talented and expensive artist you see at market the better sign for his future in my opinion. People are buying Rydens for a million dollars because they are collectors who see the work as being important in art history, nit just because they think they can get 2 million at auction next year. And even if they could, chances are they'd rather put it in a museum.

This comment has got to be a wind up. Bit like your complaint about pictures with things spilled on them or tea cup stains.
Also using what sells in Bonhams or Christies as a yardstick for the longevity of street art is a strange argument. Not to be taken seriously I think.

Mark Ryden ๐บ๐ธ Lowbrow Art โข Pop Surrealism โข New Release, by pezlow on Feb 13, 2008 10:51:29 GMT 1, I've read this thread with interest. Firstly a couple of comments - Ryden has been discussed here many times before, on numerous threads.
Secondly to defend those people who hadn't heard of him before I would say that Ryden is not very well known over here, however much his originals may sell for. If you asked a lot of British contemporary art collectors they wouldn't know who Ryden is, save for some vague notion of him being leader of the low-brow movement in the states.
There are very few galleries in the UK who sell low-brow art. Richard Goodal gallery in Manchester and the Portal Gallery in London are the only ones that immediately spring to mind.
Whilst no-one is denying that Ryden is an extremely talented painter his work does very little for me. And frankly just because he can paint in a photorealistic way does not, in my opinion, make him any more talented than other artists who choose not to paint in that way.
Moreover I find the subject matter of most of his work really creepy and disturbing and not in a good way.

I agree with you completely. It was more of a comment on where they stand in the collective consciousness of the mainstream world, as a comment on their fame. Certainly you can't argue that Blur sold more album's than MJ.

James I think you must be reading another thread, because I dont remember mentioning Hirst, apart from asking "who is Hirst", how you construe from that, that I think he is the centre of the art universe, is totally beyond me, or is it my avatar? so if that is the case, everybody's avatar reflects what they think is the centre of the art universe, you have one strange outlook my friend.
Loucastel, I like how you have this skewed view of Hirst being the center of the art universe, it's cute. I personally love some of the American artists around at the moment, the odd one or two I would happily purchase. I don't know could just be my interpretation of things... No, you obviously dont know!
