LAzarides presents David Choe - Nothing To Declare, by publicsquare on Apr 24, 2010 1:18:41 GMT 1, One thing I'm curious about though: Why would they have a street-art show in a retail store at the Beverly Drive Mall? Why not a dirty old warehouse downtown; Banksy style? The photos show the work being displayed in what looks like dressing rooms? I agree. Of course, being an LA native, I HATE Beverly Hills. The show was in what I think must have been an old Anthropologie store a block over from Rodeo Drive. The gallery location and space seemed to scream "commodity packaged for the monied" and looked at odds with the work.
The highlight of the show (for me as well as many of there people I talked to at the show last night) were the watercolors. They were displayed in the dressing rooms the back of the space. I found that standing in a space where one is normally undressing provided just the right feeling of vulnerability and intimacy to view small, delicate works.
I'll try to post some images later.

LAzarides presents David Choe - Nothing To Declare, by RPM on Apr 24, 2010 3:30:05 GMT 1, I think the point of having it in BH was to demonstrate (especially to the stereotypical uber-rich art buyers and galleries) that these "outsider" artists are the future. I personally have no problem with BH. It ain't my favorite place in the world (the timed traffic lights piss me off) but I don't hate on it. What I did find pleasing last night was the fact that so many people came to the show and were actually buying the art. I also have a feeling that when the madness of the opening weekend dies down, its location and amazing imagery will draw people in that otherwise would never have heard of Choe or Laz. In the end, that's a hugely positive thing.
BTW, for those of you thinking of heading down to the opening tonight, I've heard rumors that Die Antwoord may be performing. If they do, say hello to all the ninjas.
Oh, and dime683, I agree with you that certain of the watercolors had a Neckface feel to them. The bats in particular. But the level of detail in the images was something that I have never seen in a Neckface work. Just my $.02

Especially the bats...come to think of it, even the human character pieces resembled Neckfaces look and style.
And on the subject of the location... not very many (if any) galleries in downtown LA are moving $50k pieces. I'm not a fan of Beverly Hills, but I understand and appreciate the purpose for this shows location. Poor people don't come to Beverly Hills, hence ideal place to sell expensive art.

All the asian sex porn themes I could do without. Elementary school angst coming alive on canvas.

The show is here, the artist is here, and I've heard that some of the best printers in the world are here...
I would love a Dave Choe print too; can't even come close to the originals.

There were a fair number of red (actually blue) dots next to pieces at the preview not to mention a line of people inquiring about other pieces -- so I suspect that quite a few pieces have sold.

LAzarides presents David Choe - Nothing To Declare, by brittbritt on Apr 28, 2010 4:19:24 GMT 1, I asked about the watercolors at the public opening night, and was told they were all sold... That was near the end of the evening. $5K was a bit beyond my budget anyways...
The work was sooooo good, I wouldn't be surprised if it's already a sold-out show...

it would make a great print. My only concern is that customs over here may have an issue with the excited p***s element

LAzarides presents David Choe - Nothing To Declare, by HHills on May 3, 2010 6:55:16 GMT 1, I went to the David Choe show twice this weekend. Amazing original canvases and watercolors. They also just released a new Giclee print at the show (limited edition of 38) called 'I like My Waffles With Deep Throat Tears'. Really great print! I'm sure it will be gone quickly.
