Dante's Commedia does not only deal with an imagined journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. The importance of significant numbers plays a great part of Dante's narrative. Particularly in Purgatory Dante displays his awareness of the scientific, astronomical and astrological knowledge of the time.
88 is a number that is recognised as simultaneously representing the infinitely small and the infinitely large; it is also, currently, the number of officially recognised stellar constellations.
And there is also a direct relevance of the number 88 to the story of the World Trade Center on September 11. Construction manager Frank De Martini and construction inspector Pablo Ortiz worked with the Port Authority on the 88th floor. On that day these two men worked to rescue survivors from behind blocked doors on the upper floors of the North Tower. Sadly, both died in the attack, but their selfless courage saved the lives of 77 people.

strangely enough I was on the phone with a colleague in London about a matter - and he says to me a plane just went into one of the twin towers... and I said, "no way" - he said "really"
who knew... I'm right there and someone from across the pond - miles away, alerted me... the ashes coming down were like rain... mad loss...

This piece has taken over 4 years of work, from initial ideas to finishing. It is in the collection of the MAGI'900 Museum of Art in Bologna, and is on loan for the duration of the New York show.
