Guy Denning ๐ฌ๐ง New Paintings โข Neomodern , by Neate Michael on Feb 12, 2008 13:53:31 GMT 1, If you look at the RP website: www.redpropeller.co.uk/section158493_121844.html
the majority of Guy's work remains unsold.
Do you think the reason for this, is that the board hyped Guy up, bought all his old pieces and that his fans on here now all have pieces, and outside the board his name means nothing to anybody hence RP put up the prices and nobosy buys them?
Or am I wrong in thinking the board is that powerful? But if not, high prices cannot be the only reason for lack of sales, because other artists have seen huge increases (Mat Small, Ian Francis) and they sell...
And is Lister the new Denning? His prints over at Elms did not fly off the shelves did they? And Choe's are not flying off the shelf either are they... was he a one print wonder? (albeit two versions)..
Possibly I just think too much...

Only problem for me is i can't afford anywhere near the kind of prices they're asking... even with the price cut (which was pretty good of them!).

Guy Denning ๐ฌ๐ง New Paintings โข Neomodern , by Daniel Silk on Feb 12, 2008 15:47:25 GMT 1, Yeah I think they have jumped the gun a bit.
They needed to wait to build up a bigger following before having a go at bumping up the prices I seem to remember advising them to keep the prices low.

Guy Denning ๐ฌ๐ง New Paintings โข Neomodern , by mcnuts on Feb 12, 2008 16:20:25 GMT 1, i quite like a lot of his stuff too but simply cant afford it (there is a forum member on here who has his favourite piece of mine and I will be forever jealous). The imagery of the new stuff is intentionally abrasive and uncomfortable and, to be honest, even if I did have the money donโt know if I would want it on my wall. Having said this, I do have an appreciation for guyโs ethos and talent. Just too pricey for me now.

I am currently uploading all the remaining (plus sold) pieces, once complete, (cost me ยฃ12 to update my flickr to pro..so you best enjoy them!)I will post them here..they are not hung up, so they look even better to me!
15mins as my computer is painfully slow..
Prices increase would not deter me if I had the available funds..am skint at the mo, so relatively unaffected!
Hope to see his work become affordable to all again..

Guy Denning ๐ฌ๐ง New Paintings โข Neomodern , by scavos on Feb 12, 2008 16:40:29 GMT 1, Harvyn's is rather special isn't it!
I gather there were some issues around covering rental costs in inner city London that contributed toward the hike in prices. No doubt the ยฃ8000 piece at Bonhams played its part too. I think the fact RP brought the prices down, after negotiating with the gallery speaks volumes in terms of having a flexible approach and listening to customers. I respect them for that. As with everything, there's always more going on in the background that we know nothing about.
The fact is Guy's work is steadily increasing in popularity and this latest price hike was initially too high. Time will tell if the prices are now pitched at the right level. His work is consistently strong and unapologetically powerful and romantic. Arguably his strongest body of work yet.
A couple of points that I remind myself about are: 1) RP is not the only source of Denning work and therefore prices will no doubt vary. They'd better do or my hopes of owning a canvas are probably gone.
2) Denning has been painting for years and it would be ridiculous to believe that just because many paintings from his latest show remain unsold at this moment in time means the end is nigh!
I think the less we view artists like horses to back the more we can enjoy/hate/ignore their work with genuine passion. Don't get me wrong, I'm not preaching about financial rights and wrongs and I welcome a thread that opens the discussion, but it seems we all too readily reflect the way British media builds people up to only knock them back down again when we see fit.

Guy Denning ๐ฌ๐ง New Paintings โข Neomodern , by loucastel on Feb 12, 2008 16:52:31 GMT 1, I think perhaps one of the reasons this exhidition didnt do so well is the subject metter, because i think the ones that was'nt so 9/11 orientated did sell, trouble is the subject has been done to death, and I personaly find it very depressing let alone have one on my wall, Guys style is intentionaly dark, but this just seems to highlight it a bit too much. I look forward to his next exhibition, although as others have said already it looks like he is being pushed to the next level, price wise, time will tell.

Guy Denning ๐ฌ๐ง New Paintings โข Neomodern , by top on Feb 12, 2008 16:56:49 GMT 1, Think we need to remember that Guy paints the images in his head onto canvas. Got to get them out, so even if they don't always appeal, it may be a factor to consider.
I'm sure he has a lot up his sleeve for upcoming shows..
Pretty sure he will move in a different direction to the 9/11 pieces..
Look forward to more portraits and new subject matter

Agreed 100%, the 9/11, and inparticular the twin towers imagery is just too obvious IMO - still a huge fan though, this body of work just not for me, price wise or content
