Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by raiden on Oct 4, 2008 6:17:12 GMT 1, First, that's not the main version of MBW's Campbells, the original version was beyond close to Rene's. Second, I'm speaking mostly of the MBW show in LA. I defy you to find a serious review from post show that didn't at least make reference to his unoriginality and in some cases, outright saying he's bereft of ideas. (Of course the little good press was because he paid off an editor at Swindle Magazine)
He "created" practically a 1,000 pieces in six months.... (or others created them for him) and frankly 80% (and I'm being nice) was directly stolen in technique, style, content, and execution from another artist, mostly smaller LA based artists who suspiciously had gallery openings in the months prior.
In his "assistant" Justin's own words in answers others blistering critiques of MBW's LA show: "As far as copying work goes, yes alot of the imagery existed before it was put on a canvas or print in the gallery, in fact most of it did. Thats the point of the work, He is taking cultural icons you see everyday, and mixing them together to make you think, remember, become nostalgic." But its one thing to have a single referential piece that may be similar to another artists work, its yet another to have 1,000 that he admits he didn't paint, but still took credit for! (and I'm not hyperbolizing in numbers...)
I'll just say it, MBW hired assistants and they plagiarized other artists because he tried to do an art show larger in scope than his abilities.
There were literally 50 Warhol type Marilyns of various other celebrities. Another 75 Banksy like "Add something that doesn't supposed to be there to a classic painting" 100 Stencils that included subject matter someone else had already done. (Jimi Hendrix stencil, yawn)
Ready, here goes....
Jef Aerosol 2006
MBW 2008
Rene Gagnon 2007
MBW 2008
Banksy circa 2004 (Probably wrong, don't want to look it up, don't correct it... I know pre-2006)
MBW 2008 (I should add, 7 months prior, a smaller LA artist I forget the name of did a series of Warhol Marilyns of Celebrity... it was not note worthy then)
And then to finish it out.... Where did MBW bite off this technique?
I don't have the time and energy to go through each and every image at the time of seeing his show I noticed something not kosher about.
MBW is a very nice guy who I actually enjoy the company of when I see him at art shows around town, but I do not think he's original in the least.

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by gbh on Oct 4, 2008 7:42:03 GMT 1, I don't think anyone is saying he's original. The main topic as far as I can decipher (or in my mind anyway) is why the beating up on him when the exact same thing is done by many many others (hence my posting of several litres of soup).

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by fool4faile on Oct 4, 2008 8:48:54 GMT 1, wow, what is going on here? calm down, boyz! since i started this thread, maybe i should explain why i asked- i simply wanted to know who did the idea with the SOUP can as a SPRAY can first (because i think this is the first time an "urban" connotation by a "street" artist has been added even if i knew of banksy's and obey's versions that were made before and probably further ones will be done, which is normal). and because i saw that mbw's screen prints of this theme can be purchased for a few thousand dollars (@ guy hepner's), rene's version, which we now all do agree was the originator of the SPRAY CAN-idea, can still be purchased for only 120 dollars through his homepage- I SIMPLY THINK THIS IS NOT FAIR! obviously this is just another example of the must of having the right connections instead of the must of having original ideas and talent to become a "star" in the artworld...

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by poorgirl on Oct 6, 2008 15:37:32 GMT 1, which of the artists came up first with their version of warhol's campbell's soup-can as a spray-can, the idea is basically the same. gagnon calls his "graffiti soup" and Mr Brainwash "tomato spray"- i saw the gagnons first, but that doesn't have to mean he actually produced it before mbw. does anyone here know 4 sure?
i agree with everyone about the ownership thing, at this point no one owns anything. but gagnon did this particular concept first, taking a spray can and making it a campbells soup can. means nothing in the grand scheme of things, i guess. found this in the wooster archive dated march 24, 2006 - scroll down quite a bit

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by Tiki on Nov 2, 2008 1:17:15 GMT 1, Challenge is on graeme but the really hard thing is creating a piece from say banksy that hasn't been created yet or rather making it out to be a new banksy. Does that make sense?
If you create a banksy i'll create a faile or whatever you may choose?

No but really though i'd quite like to do this. Are you up for it, putting your all in that is? Could make for a terrible charity crimbo card or something. Dosen't have to be perfect but like i said good fun as im well up for it.
Possibly have various people create some new works from some of our favourite artists?
