Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by dmandpenfold on May 23, 2007 11:14:38 GMT 1, i agree, looks good, but is this sort of thing getting a little tired and cliche'd ...OR... is it part of the whole street art thing to take classic pieces and change them and therefore each image is perfectly valid.
I think the problem comes when you have too much of the same thing at once (you could take the che images as a possible example), the one above even though i like it has been done a fair bit in recent times, it's almost like an artist competition to do the best and cleverest version of cans.

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by Tyler Durden on May 23, 2007 11:56:33 GMT 1, I agree with you to a certain extent dm, but I also remember another thread on here discussing a similar point when Banksy's Flag and D*Face's Death and Glory followed Bast's attempt. Graffiti artists try and outdo each other on the graffiti front and given that this is street art, it's not surprising that the same's happening here.
I agree, the cans aren't for me - Banksy's Soup cans still don't appeal to me, but I do kind of understand why they all release similar ideas.

I guess everyone has their preferred version of the more popular artist runs

I believe it was Picasso who said it best:
"good artists copy, great artists steal!"
never is this more apparent than in the world of Street Art/Urban Art

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by andrewd on May 26, 2007 19:30:40 GMT 1, I was in Mash on Oxford Street (london) today. They have some interetsting tshirts. One has a large Campbells Soup Can as Spray can ( a la Rene Gagnon) on the Front, another had a Shat-at with a tape recorder for a torso. There was another showing baseball players as dead 'eyecons' Not sure who designed them but they certainly show some familar influences!

Rene says...(from the lightside)
"yeah i get it, soup cans warhol old news whatever, the first label i made was to put on a spray paint can and photograph so i could make a masthead for wooster collective with hopes it would get posted and it did, i considered it a compliment any promotion is great, i then started to make labels and leave the cans around because it really didn't hurt any surfaces, i had never seen this concept before, in fact 2 days after it was posted on wooster i received an email from the company that made that shirt (which i still have) telling me "we don't want you to think we took your idea, but we have a shirt coming out and here is our image" the one you see posted, so thats fine it's not like the concept would have never been thought of, it's not out of the realm of possibility anyway, so am i to stop using it, hell no it just looks cool to me, if that was the case i better throw out my entire body of work because i like to splash paint around like pollock. the image became something i used again pasting black and white versions of the graffiti soup cans to develope some pattern in larger works, hence the image is just a photo of a real spray paint can with a label there wasn't a need or want for that matter to get the "perspective" perfect because i'd be painting over it anyway, and i wasn't going to change that for the print i used the original photo, perspective and all, it is what it is, even if i only sell the 4 i have so far it was worth it. and yes i'm trying to make a few dollars to keep painting, my daughter is off to college in september so i'm probably going to have to rely on things like this to keep me painting, and i certainly don't like mass producing stuff over and over but its been helping lately, i went 7 years without selling a dam thing. a couple of hundred here and there really helps. i went this long selling nothing, self financing my entire body of work, i don't neeeed to sell, but it's nice ; ) "
