No matter how weird contemporary art gets there’ll always be room for a smoothly accomplished portrait painter who shows people as they actually are. The question here is whether Jonathan Yeo is that artist.
Son of one time culture minister Tim Yeo (though we shouldn’t hold that against him), Yeo presents himself as a super-skilled figurative painter with a contemporary edge.
He shows at Banksy’s gallery and has created collaged portraits – notably of George W Bush – composed from fragments of pornographic images. The fact that he works in divergent styles, from fairly conservative (with a small c) to what might be considered a kind of pop art, might lead to the assumption that his images of the grand and the glitzy are not supposed to be taken at face value, that they represent a kind of post-modern portraiture in which traditional elements are seen in inverted commas.
There’s no sign of irony, however, in his image of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban for courageously insisting on going to school, who is the much heralded surprise-sitter in this small retrospective. She may be a more deserving (if less newsworthy) subject than, say, David Cameron or Lady Gaga, but there’s an almost Victorian sentimentality to the image with its earnest, limpid eyes, despite the contrast between the smoothly finished face and hands and the rawly rendered headscarf.
It’s a technique that’s apparent in all the large portraits in the first room, including Kevin Spacey as Richard III looking confidingly out at us with big gooey eyes, Damien Hirst enthroned in a chemical protection suit, Grayson Perry in a pink dress on a pink bed, Helena Bonham Carter looking like a wind-blown flower fairy in a top hat.
