Let me just highlight the ironic wink in my original post. The bag was clearly empty.

Its graffiti, I would prefer it stay where it was and be buffed at some point. You are probably right in some way though. Banksy new as soon as these made his website they would be gone... he even to the picture at an angle so that recognisable land marks were in the back ground.

This piece has got stolen property and criminal damage written all over it - pure and simple. Even if I had the mind of a wanton thief and pinched it for my own wall I couldn't look at it hanging there without worrying that there might be a knock on the door at some point. It may forever stay on the black market and who knows how much it's actually worth as a result.

I have a suspicion the local press will be releasing stories about the theft of this very soon, as they've all joyfully announced that B has graced the area with his presence. It also had the potential to bring in new visitors to the area who will now not be coming and that's a shame (not that you need a Banksy as an excuse to go and visit what has to be one of the oddest places in the UK - imo).

If it comes up for sale there could well be some serious questions to answer. But.... The only person who could press charges is the owner of the container, and they may not give a flying rat about it.

This has apparently just been on the BBC South East news. Local councillor interviewed about the theft and what a shame it was etc - valued it at some ridiculous (100k) figure but said it could never be sold now because it was nicked. They reckon the piece was signed by Banksy and the thieves left the sig behind!!!!!!!!!! I didn't see even a trace of one and checked my close-up shots and can't see any trace there either. Sounds like a trap to me - they're hoping the thief might come back and get what they supposedly left behind and nab them!!!!

All this comes second hand - if I catch it on the 10 o'clock news I'll hopefully see for myself.

Just seen the news. Someone has indeed added a dodgy Banksy sig since the theft and they think it's genuine. Also had a Drewetts auctioneers art 'expert' on who said it would never be saleable at auction due to the way it was removed leaving a big question over ownership.
