TOX π¬π§ Graffiti, Street Art, Artwork For Sale, by Heavyconsumer on Mar 3, 2009 22:57:50 GMT 1, Hi JA, doing great thanks and I hope you're well too. Yes of course, to each his own - I def' overstepped my own boundries when describing the piece in such a derogatory way (some things are better kept to ourselves)
I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just think that some of the arguments that pop up when it suits people are a bit out of context and they seem a little spurious, especially talking about "yuppie art dealer wannabes" in the same breath as paying Β£75 for a tag from a gallery. Dinner time here. Enjoy.

TOX π¬π§ Graffiti, Street Art, Artwork For Sale, by dynamixx on Mar 3, 2009 23:22:39 GMT 1, This movement was built on all that nasty tagging, all the NY pioneers of the 1970/80s did was tag their names at first, but they planted a seed without which we wouldn't have the likes of Banksy today. I don't deny the historical importance of tagging, but you can't really say that all street art came from New York, there was even graffiti found on the walls of Pompeii. I appreciate that books such as Chalfant's subway art helped to proliferate the work, opening it up to a wider audience, but I don't think that if the NY scene had never happened, there wouldn't be a street art scene to speak of today. In regards to the tagging, it's suggested that it was borne from the residents of the underprivelidged areas of NY wanting to mark something as their own, posessing a part of their public realm, and they realised that scrawling your name onto a train would allow it to be seen all around the city, even in the more affluent areas, thus emphasising their presence. The same thinking, where tagging is seen as a symptom of a run-down and ill-administered area, still rings true today, where, as a result, crime is more likely to occur, or at least be percieved to occur. Thus, although tagging may not cause crime, it creates a fear of crime. Due to this persistent reaction, it will always be villified by government, resulting, via their misunderstanding and failed appreciation of the spectrum and indeed positive effect of street art, in all work in all its forms to be targetted. If it wasn't for tagging like this, street art would have a much better name, wouldn't be buffed quite so often, and not so many street artists would be seen as criminals.
And even thousands of years prior to Pompeii cavemen wrote stuff on walls, that's what's so special about graffiti compared to any other artistic movement. New York was a definite turning point, but maybe we should save the significance of that for a different day.
It's all just different perceptions isn't it? Where you see urban decay and crime, I see a voice given to an otherwise unspoken underclass.
For a large chunk of dispossed nobodies with no voice, a marker or can of molotow is their only way of being heard. There are far worse outlets of poverty/urban decay/frustration or whatever you want to call it. If 1% of those unsightly taggers go on to create something that this forum or bourgeois auction houses consider to be art, would their collective endevours be considered worthwhile?
Graf has and always will be buffed by the authorities, give or take one or two big name exceptions in recent years. Its lack of permanence is what makes it so exciting and quick to evolve. I for one am happy the establishment isn't celebrating it.
If big corporations can bombard me with images everywhere, even when I look up from taking a piss, then why shouldn't those who have no canvas, other than the streets, be stopped from doing so?

TOX π¬π§ Graffiti, Street Art, Artwork For Sale, by bmjt on Mar 4, 2009 0:26:24 GMT 1, Hey Dynamixx, cheers for the response, always more than happy to have a friendly debate. In response to your points :
"And even thousands of years prior to Pompeii cavemen wrote stuff on walls, that's what's so special about graffiti compared to any other artistic movement."
Of course graffiti is special, it's uncontrollable, free, straight from the mind of anyone and everyone who wants to do it, but in this instance i'm solely talking about tagging.
"New York was a definite turning point, but maybe we should save the significance of that for a different day."
It most certainly was, as I somewhat alluded to
"It's all just different perceptions isn't it? Where you see urban decay and crime, I see a voice given to an otherwise unspoken underclass. "
I'm not talking about my perception, i'm talking about the perception of the general public. All i'm saying is that it doesn't matter what we think, it's Granny Miggins who complains to the council which fuels their anti-graffiti campaigns
"For a large chunk of dispossed nobodies with no voice, a marker or can of molotow is their only way of being heard. "
That's exactly what said in my last post.
There are far worse outlets of poverty/urban decay/frustration or whatever you want to call it. If 1% of those unsightly taggers go on to create something that this forum or bourgeois auction houses consider to be art, would their collective endevours be considered worthwhile?
Of course it would, but that's not going to stop the general public being scared by their tagging. To be fair though, this debate did originate from Tox's piece, and he hasn't really progressed thus far. He of course may have a load of work i've never seen, but this piece in question is just a tag.
"Graf has and always will be buffed by the authorities, give or take one or two big name exceptions in recent years. Its lack of permanence is what makes it so exciting and quick to evolve. I for one am happy the establishment isn't celebrating it."
Yeah, I was going to say something about that, the ephemerality of it is key, but maybe it would be better if work was replaced by other artists, as opposed to the buff? Ot maybe that loses something, not sure. Thoughts?
"If big corporations can bombard me with images everywhere, even when I look up from taking a piss, then why shouldn't those who have no canvas, other than the streets, be stopped from doing so?"
I've got absolutely no problem with that, we've all read Wall and Piece, and i'm a tad surprised you think I would think otherwise, I love street art, but all I would say is that why not brighten up an area or use a witty message to put something across, not just scrawl your name.
Edit : I guess not.

The mark of success of a print is that it sells out instantly? Wholly disagree, all that an instant sell out means is that it is flippable. For me this TOX print is the single biggest success of the last 12 months and what makes it 100 times better is you can still buy it

I agree with you on that one bad robot - sending hate mail to SOS is ridiculous, they are one of the most ethical galleries around, loads of charity work, small editions, low prices, very friendly helpful people.
I still don't like the print though : )

It just seems enormously contradictary imo. Just how many times are you going to quote my post ? How can you tell me wether my opinions are right or wrong ?? If nothing else TOX has a place in Londons graff history and will be rememberd long after 95% of the artists mentioned on here. If you dont mind me asking, what even got you into graff ?? ps...no more shouting, coz its me that will get the ban

Are you being serious; not having a go just interested? Why is this print such a massive success (considering it's been a strong 12 months)?
the fact that you can still buy them speaks volume, and if that isnt loud enough for you, its s**te The mark of success of a print is that it sells out instantly? Wholly disagree, all that an instant sell out means is that it is flippable. For me this TOX print is the single biggest success of the last 12 months and what makes it 100 times better is you can still buy itAre you being serious; not having a go just interested? Why is this print such a massive success (considering it's been a strong 12 months)?
