Ron English ๐บ๐ธ Popaganda โข Pop Culture โข Toys, by dzel on Mar 21, 2009 21:05:40 GMT 1, NEW MURAL IN JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY ON TUESDAY. I WAS ON HAND TO DOCUMENT IT ALL AS IT UNFOLDED. CHECK OUT THIS SMALL VIDEO MONTAGE OF SOME OF MY PHOTOS. LIVE ACTION FOOTAGE AS WELL AS SOME FUN AFTER PARTY FOOTAGE COMING SOON.
FROM ARRESTEDMOTION.COM :
Yesterday afternoon, one of our favorite contemporary pop artists, Ron English, along with west coast artists Bigfoot and Jason Maloney, injected a little extra life into downtown Jersey City. They blessed Hudson County Art Supplyโs exterior wall in Jersey City, NJ with a huge, colorful, and collaborative mural.
It was a gorgeous day for painting. Even Jersey City Mayor, Jeremiah Healey showed up unexpectedly to show his appreciation and support for the project. Everyone was in good spirits and there were aerosol cans everywhere. All day long, a wide variety of people stopped by to soak up the mural in progress. Cars drove by stopping to take a peek, causing traffic jams.
This mural was the first of hopefully many more community mural projects being organized by a Jersey City curator and photographer, Dylan Evans. Dylan is in the progress of launching a Mural Arts Program for Jersey City. To hear more about this project from Dylan as well as a cool giveaway, check after the jumpโฆ
โIโve lived in Jersey City for 10 years, and have called New Jersey home for 30 years. I have pride in my town, and I had an idea to use art to improve and unite the diverse communities in Jersey City. I felt that murals from todayโs top talented artists would draw media attention, which would bring in visitors, and would stimulate the local economy. This is how I proposed the project to the city when I asked them for free public walls to allow for LEGAL murals. To my surprise, I was met with positive response from both the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the cityโs Redevelopment Agency. The first โcity sponsoredโ murals should be started this spring and be ready for Summer.
Ron English has been a supporter of my idea from the very beginning. Rather than wait for the city to give over the first wall, we wanted to get a jump start and get a public painting up as soon as possible. Hudson County Art Supply in downtown Jersey City is contributing their buildingโs facade to be the first public painting in what will be a growing mural program that will span the entire city.โ
There will be a private wrap party this Thursday, March 19th at Gallery 58 to celebrate the creation of this first public mural of many more to follow. Get on out to Jersey City some time as the art scene over there is ever-expanding.
As always, AM has a cool giveaway from the dayโs event. Itโs an empty Montana Gold spray paint can signed by all 3 artists. Post your comments and weโll pick a winner on Sunday March 22, 2009.

RON ENGLISH - LAZARUS RISING 8 May - 6 June 2009 Tuesday - Saturday 12 - 6pm, Thursdays 'til 8pm
The first ever UK solo show of American, billboard hi-jacking, political activist, pop surrealist RON ENGLISH
Private View Thursday 7th May between 6 - 9pm
What makes a Ron English piece of art instantly recognisable beyond its signature photorealist technique and brazen colour scheme is the utterly unique way in which the artwork presents a new idea embedded in the familiar, creating progressive mutations whilst referring to historical events. When English was an art student he started to hijack billboards as a way of displaying his art to as many people as possible โ it was later that he realised he could make political statements by the same means. He replaced existing advertisements with his own hand-painted "subvertisements" spreading his own socio-political message. The new exhibition, with its deliberately provocative theme of resurrection, reflects the contemporary socio-political situation, presenting uncomfortable and dark insights beneath the slick, plastic face of our society. โRon English continues to exploit the mismatch between effortless style and edgy content in his paintings. Itโs an effective strategy, wrong-footing viewers and making them reconsider the way they might absorb imagery from advertising without critically engaging with it.โ Ben Jones, art historian.
Included in this exhibition, are some of Ron English's latest canvases from a series of paintings based on the 1937 Picasso masterpiece 'GUERNICA' Whilst the original depicted the tragedy of the Spanish Civil war, English has transcribed the composition to reflect our troubled times,
A beautiful limited edition book has been published by the gallery to accompany the exhibition.
It is a hard bound book of 48 pages, with 29 full color images, and costs ยฃ35. The introductory essay has been written by Paul Jones, and an essay by writer and critic Francesca Gavin gives an insight into Ron Englishโs pioneering approach to art.
Ron English will be in the gallery between 12.00 and 2.00pm on Saturday 9th May to sign copies of the book
