NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by Red Propeller on Jul 21, 2007 14:26:39 GMT 1, 'Minotaur Woman Going To Kick Your Right Wing Arse' is going up on Red Propeller at 6pm Sunday (Tomorrow) at ยฃ795.00 .
Due to the fact that as yet we have no mechanism to automatically remove an item from the Red Propeller site once it is sold we have to do it manually.
I know, primitive isn't it.
This means just recently particularly since Guy Denning came on board - when a new piece is released loads of people hit the button at the same time to buy it - to be totally fair we look at the time the first purchase went through and that person gets it and everyone else has to be disappointed and refunded. Which is crap -SORRY!
We are desperately trying to sort this situation out but in the meantime-
Everyone who tries to buy Guy's new piece on Sunday (tomorrow) will be offered the option to buy an exclusive Giclee print of the piece if they are unsuccessful. The edition will only be the size of the number of people who tried to buy the original and who have to be refunded on paypal because they didnt get it.
The runners up wil be able to have an exclusive option to use ยฃ195.00 of the moneys they have committed to buying one of these very limited and by the very nature of the offer instantly sold out prints.
Everyone will be informed of the outcome and the edition size and offered the choice or a full refund.
I hope this makes sense to everyone!

NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by Red Propeller on Jul 21, 2007 15:10:44 GMT 1, Point taken - any ideas on how to get around that are welcome - not everyone who trys to buy the original will want the print so whatever isnt taken up could be offered i guess.
The edition size of the print will only be as many as there are disappointed customers you see - its to make up.

NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by romanywg on Jul 21, 2007 16:46:36 GMT 1, It's going to be melt down time, I can see it now. I think POW do it best and just put them up any old time and don't let anyone know. Then the first one that happens to log in at the exact moment or near enough, gets lucky.

Everything Guy does means something to him. I bet there is alot of thought behind this piece. Anyone who ownes a guy denning original should be chuffed to bits because I think he is going far.
You have a real piece of the artist there that will never be replicated. nice one!

NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by a4mnt on Jul 22, 2007 1:31:58 GMT 1, Thus Repulse was one of the first pieces I was drawn to.....unfortunately though there were four other pieces i was drawn to more, so bought those. Now though, I can see the (whats the name of that thing where you type in labels) label typee thing, same as I have on PS, and like it even more.
Its not bloody diarrhea or whatever. If it appeals to you, it probably will do straight away, but no art is going to be everyones choice is it.
You know what they say, if you haven't got something good to say, then say nothing. All sorts of artists read these forums and it must be a tiny bit soul destroying reading criticism.....fair enough, you make something that remains in the public domain, you expect it, but still, i've been in an industry where you are judged quite harshly on your beloved creations (probably a lot of us have) and it can be quite saddening.
Oh well, been out drinking wine again and said my piece.......
;D

NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by bobbymeachamjr on Jul 22, 2007 2:21:44 GMT 1, art is subjective - and yes it looks like bloody diarrhea to me. Im head creative for an agency here in the states and the best feedback Ive received over the years has been of the criticism variety. Hes got some nice pieces but this is not one of them. A friend of mine passed along pdfs of his work for sale about 2 months ago - dirt cheap and I still passed. I thought it was decent but.... Most people in this scene seem to be of the herd mentality - buying/praising names or hype vs individual works of art. Just something to think about - would you give a s*hit about this if it wasnt for the "Micallef recommends"? - sorry for the harshness but I've been hanging out with a bunch of frenchies...

NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by alderevans2007 on Jul 22, 2007 2:53:21 GMT 1, I inquired about buying Guys work months ago, before Micallef recommended him, so your point does not apply to me.
It doesn't make sense to say that we are all crazy about him just because of Micallef's recommendation. For Micallef to recommend him in the first place means he has some talent. If he is good enough for Micallef, then obviously, lots more people are going to like his work also. I agree that if Micallef recommended something crap, then there would be a lot of false hype and buying. But Micallef wouldn't do that, would he? So therefore, you do not have much of a point.
I also spoke, at length to the owner of one of the galleries that sells Guy's work. She has lectured on fine art for 18 years and told me that she only signs artists that she feels produce very strong work with the potential for great future success. Obviously, everyone has their own opinion, but at the end of the day, if somebody like this woman and Micallef see something in an artist, then there are going to plenty of people who are also going to love his work.
I think it is pretty foolish to think that Guys work is restricted to this forum buying selling hype nonsense.

NEW GUY DENNING ORIGINAL@RED PROPELLER, by a4mnt on Jul 22, 2007 3:03:08 GMT 1, bobbymeachamjr - honestly? the micallef comment didn't man f**k all really. its nice for Guy, but means nothing to me. there were prints and originals for sale 10 days ago when i made my purchases and if i was that drawn by the micallef comment i would have bought them all. But I didn't. I purely bought the pieces that said something to me, albeit within my price range. The main factor for me was buying originals in a style that I appreciated. I can't imagine that chance will happen very often. Owning a piece that no-one else has any kind of copy of is a new feeling for me and I'm glad to have experienced that this once. I can't afford an original banksy/micallef/neate etc, but I'll sure as hell get as much joy out of Guy's work, even more so that he's taken the time to email back about certain points.
The herd mentality is an understandable point but also an easy target. This forum is a meeting point for likeminded people to discuss new and established artists. Agreed there was some frenzied posting and I hold my hands up totally for doing that, I was enjoying help create a buzz around an artist, that was almost as much fun as owning an original, but my heart is in the right place as I hope all the hype created lasts for Guy and his work.
And before any money aspects are involved, owning those originals means you'd never know what they are worth, as there are never identical copies sold to guage the worth. They are only worth what they mean to the owner. You could watch a similar canvas by the same artist sell for a fortune then watch yours not sell as no-one likes it, so the value is meaningless except in its enjoyment.
Also agreed the best feedback can be from criticism, but as you are in an industry that is involved in that sphere, you yourself would probably know that criticism is best absorbed and put to good use when it comes from sources you respect and not total strangers, which takes me back to my original comment. As long as you realise it was not meant personally, then its all good.
Give the Frenchies hell by the way

I give an artist like Guy the utmost respect. Hes earned it. Theres just sooo many great artists who dont get the recognition. What did they used to say in Art history class? - the Art world is controlled by the art critic. Well in this case its controlled by Laz and the POW crew. It would be foolish to think that the Micallef reference is not the reason for practical anonymity to threads such as this. You spent 3/4 of your post saying "If he is good enough for Micallef...." and how a gallery.... Basically you contradict yourself by allowing others to influence/validate your perception of "what is good" rather than making your own independent judgements. I reiterate, I think Guy is a very talented artist and hes paid his dues. My point is - and good for Guy! - that this overnight popularity is due to forces outside of his art. His art has always been there.
