Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by naughtyshorty on Jul 2, 2010 9:35:43 GMT 1, yeah - not nice having your reputation taken through the mud like that.
I do wonder how many fake Banksys are out there these days. those, and other fakes i have seen are all pretty impressive, and unless you know what you are looking for, they will be hard to spot. i guess when i think back to my first banksy purchase, i would have been none the wiser...

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by ellojoe on Jul 2, 2010 11:24:15 GMT 1,
I counted 35 prints in that clip!!!
didn't that Asian guy in that BBC clip sell one of the " old fashioned con-men " a Turf war. That turned out to be iffy?
I thought that it was £1.2 million 27 months ago when the investigation started?
all seems a little ad hoc.

Is it just me or or does that sound nothing like a stern rebuke? Seems even less than a slap on the wrists!!

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by cityguerilla on Jul 3, 2010 0:14:44 GMT 1, yeah, right. ALL those multiple prints that have been shown in the national newspapers (which are the evidence) were purchased from legit galleries? So you want to kid yourself that they went and bought 20 Monkey Queen's, do you? I doubt there's a Banksy obsessed collector in the World that owns multiples of exactly the same print. What would be the point? They aren't all different colour variations like a Warhol Marilyn.
Funnily enough, one of our friends that was arrested and convicted tried passing off that nonsense story about Bonhams so people would look in a different direction. You wouldn't be writing on his behalf would you? Or are you him? hmmmmm!
As for the inks and screens - who needed them as evidence? POW had already confirmed the paper and inks on the prints Grant Champkins-Howard, and convicted benefit cheat Lee Parker, were selling were not legit. Or are you implying TomTom, Santas Ghetto and Art Republic, ect, sold these poor little guys fakes? You are? Excuse me while I get a box of tissues so I can cry for them and their innocence.[/b
]More to the point they ADMITTED they were guilty. And there's a whole number of people on here that purchased from them, and contacted the police when they grew suspicious of the quality of the artwork. End of subject
Just for the record you may want to watch this nice bit of informative BBC News footage with one of their victims

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by cityguerilla on Jul 3, 2010 0:34:13 GMT 1, Yes, WALSHY, Grant Champkins-Howard and Lee Parker ARE also the people who had all the fake Vivienne Westwood/Malcolm McLaren clothing. While the Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad were going through Howard's Croydon flat they found all the labels with Vivienne Westwood's name on them - and then matched them up with the labels on the clothing which were being prepared for sale. The fraud squad later realised that Howard had also put a lot of fake Westwood/McLaren clothing up for sale at various London auction houses.
In fact, you'll also find you could wager a very high bet that ELLOJOE who has responded to you is Grant Champkins-Howard. In fact I guarantee it. This is exactly what he does, he tries to divert attention away from himself. And today, as he's not back in a prison cell, he's spent the whole day googling his name to get information on himself.
And you see the link he's given you to the Daily Mail? That's a link to a story that I got caught up in. You see Grant Champkins-Howard sold me a pile of FAKE Westwood/McLaren clothing, some of which I innocently sold. Everything I have left that he sold me was also passed on to the fraud squad as evidence. The BIGGEST mistake I ever made was the day the Daily Mail came knocking on my door to ask who I had been purchasing Westwood/McLaren clothing from. As it caught me unaware, and as I didn't know what was going on, I didn't reveal Grant Champkins-Howard's name. But I REALLY regret it now. However, now it's not so important as he's getting his comeuppance.

MALCOLM MCLAREN'S ROLE IN BANKSY TRIAL
THE LOOK can reveal that the late Malcolm McLaren was to be a witness for the prosecution in the trial which has resulted in suspended jail sentences for conmen Grant Champkins Howard of Croydon, south London and Lee Parker, of Eastbourne, Sussex.
At Kingston Crown Court yesterday (July 1), the pair were each handed 12-month suspended sentences for selling fake Banksy prints on eBay.
“Neither of you should be under any illusion that I regard both of you as nothing more than a pair of old-fashioned conmen,” said Judge Suzan Matthews, who ordered the pair to complete 240 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months and imposed restraining orders preventing them from selling on the internet.
Parker, 45, and Champkins-Howard, 44, pleaded guilty to selling copies of genuine numbered prints on eBay, earning £57,000 over a three-year period.
Prosecutor Richard Mandel said they passed off the copies as being from official limited-edition numbered print runs made early on in the artist’s career, forging ownership documents and adding official numbers and stamps to some, which were sold for up to £2,000.
The Metropolitan Police recovered 120 prints during the investigation which, if sold as genuine, could have fetched £200,000-plus.
Champkins-Howard also denied charges of copying and embellishing clothing by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood and possessing articles for use in fraud.
It was this aspect of the case for which McLaren supplied testimony on behalf of the prosecution. His death in April is understood to have been a factor in the decision – after legal argument – for those charges to be ordered to lie on file, since Westwood was unwilling to comment.

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by Daniel Silk on Jul 3, 2010 14:58:54 GMT 1, Did these guys make the screens themselves or get hold of the originals. I swear it would be pretty hard to fake screens unless you had all of the original layers of the image seperated out...? All prints involved in this case were purchased from Tom Tom - Santa's Ghetto - Art Republic - and ex members of staff of POW. 120 prints were recovered from various places over a two year investigation, not just from the two mentioned. Also there was no screens found anywhere. What should be mentioned is the BIG money prints that were sold at Bonhams by the unknown fraudster that the police couldn't find. Personally i think this was a bit of a farce!
ellojoe, You seem to be giving the impression that you know alot about this case, but from what I know some of the things your saying don't match the facts People are calling for you to be removed from the forum, and if you are who they suspect you certainly will be! but I for one would like to hear a bit more from you and how you explain your involvement in this case?
Who are you?

The book was mainly interviews with artists, if someone does don't want to participate or is not available I guess there was not a lot they could do. I think its a good book and have enjoyed what ive read so far.

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by Daniel Silk on Jul 10, 2010 11:22:00 GMT 1, www.ryeandbattleobserver.co.uk/eastbourne-news/Banksy-forgers-walk-free.6410561.jp
"Banksy forgers walk free
Published Date: 09 July 2010 TWO FORGERS who flooded the art market with fake prints of works by world-renowned graffiti artist Banksy have walked free from court. Lee Parker, 25, of Caroline Way, Eastbourne, and childhood friend Grant Champkins-Howard, 44, of Birdhurst Rise, South Croydon, - described as 'old-fashioned con-men' by the judge - duped collectors into believing they were buying originals by the 'gADVERTISEMENT
uerilla artist' on eBay. The pair pretended the worthless copies were produced by Pictures on Walls (POW), a company with exclusive rights to produce authentic Banksy prints from 2002.
Passing sentence, Judge Suzan Matthews sentenced them to 12 months jail each - but suspended the terms for two years. They were each also ordered to perform 240 hours unpaid work at Kingston Crown Court.
Richard Mandel, prosecuting, said the pair pocketed tens of thousands of pounds and shattered confidence in the Banksy market. Police seized 120 prints, some fakes, some obvious reproductions, during a raid on Champkins-Howard's home last year.
Parker, a convicted benefit cheat and Champkins-Howard, were fans of the artist and knew how easy it was to pass off fake copies. The prosecutor said, "The defendants got to work, building on their genuine interest in Banksy, and exploiting the weaknesses of which they were aware.
"They used multiple eBay user names and email addresses, so as to give the impression that any particular transaction was as between enthusiastic collectors, thereby exploiting the trust that such a context naturally provides. "On occasion, they used their knowledge of the field to dupe buyers by blinding them with science. "Many buyers were given fake provenance documents, documents supporting authenticity, to add plausibility to the fake prints." They were arrested on April 21 last year, following a two-month police investigation.
During interview they admitted selling Banksy prints, but insisted they believed they were genuine. But the pair admitted the five-month scam, between January 1 and June 19 last year, during the week their trial was due to start last month. He added the damage was not limited to these particular losses, but may have seriously affected buyer confidence. Investigators believe they were set to make at least £100,00, but this is disputed.
The pair admitted conspiracy to defraud 'persons who were seeking to purchase screen prints based on designs by the artist known as Banksy, by successfully representing that the screen prints offered for sale by Parker and Champkins-Howard were produced under the direction of Pictures on Walls when in fact they were not'. A decision regarding costs, compensation and forfeiture will be made in December."

a long wait for some, but due to the nature of this case - it touched on the issue of money laundering - all the assets of the pair will have been documented, so no property etc should be able to be transfrred out of their names
If anyone has been ripped by these two shitbags, then make sure your paperwork is in order so you can get a decent chance of soemthing back

What fake prints were they behind, was it only the MONKEY QUEEN, GOLF SALE, QUEEN VICTORIA, GRANNIES, BOMB HUGGER, PULP FICTION, TURF WAR & LAUGH NOW - as shown in the pics and BBC footage earlier?

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by stickitup on Jul 13, 2010 14:03:46 GMT 1, I think the mark up on an unsigned making it a signed print is enough to make it worth their while to buy on the second hand market original prints and just sign them and pass them on. However what I get from the reports is that they forged both the print and the signature although no screens or inks were found (obviously would be stupid to keep them in the same place as the prints).

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by stickitup on Jul 13, 2010 15:24:58 GMT 1, well I guess if you bought it from them and they were accepting paypal as payment you would see their name. However I remember seeing a Monkey Queen a short while ago on ebay with the description "my boyfriend gave me this print by banksy, we have now split up and I don't want it" etc etc, after many offers it sold as a BIN for £500. This of course would not show the con mens name on paypal but it may well be a fake (although it was unsigned). So if you don't have the original buyers details, no receipt, or any other original details and it was a good fake, how would you know it was a fake....

Grant Howard & Lee Parker Plea Guilty fake Banksy, by dodge on Jul 14, 2010 21:24:28 GMT 1, so how to tell if your print you bought was a fake made by these guys? Are there any distinguishing features on the forgeries, ie are they blind stamped. What fake prints were they behind, was it only the MONKEY QUEEN, GOLF SALE, QUEEN VICTORIA, GRANNIES, BOMB HUGGER, PULP FICTION, TURF WAR & LAUGH NOW - as shown in the pics and BBC footage earlier?
I got stung with an unsigned HMV too. Roll on December, I might actually get some money back. I'm not holding my breath....

Yep. Had it not been for the police contacting me, I would have been completely oblivious.
