I saw them DJing at Justin Robertson's Sleuth night, at The Paradise Factory in Manchester, whilst they were still The Dust Brothers. I think it was early '95. Was pretty obvious they were going to be huge.

Haven't heard this for a while! Yes, Partners Wine Bar when they were still the Dust Brothers, a dark basement off Oxford St with a crowd of about 50! Original Social member and regular at Turnmills. I have this on my wall, it's an original Kate Gibb from 2000 one of the option designs for an album cover.

I love that some of us 20-30 years ago have no doubt been in the same queue / shared the dancefloor / knocked over drinks / nicked a cigarette / fought over the last copy of a record.

Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel
Recently I lost an old high school buddy of mine. He'd moved across the country (the US), but speaking truthfully, I lost touch of him long before then. Hearing he passed was so surreal. I only was able to attend his service via livestream, and supposedly this song, which I'd never heard, was one of his favorites, and he and his wife and kids would sing it and others around the campfire.
Everyone attending the service had a sing a long to it.
RIP, Jesse.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by mrizzle on Feb 20, 2023 21:39:20 GMT 1, I’ve been meaning to share this artist for a while. I genuinely believe that he’s a truly unique and special talent and his evolution as an artist has been fascinating. His most recent release seems to have blown up which I’m so pleased to see.
As a brief background to him (and to provide some further context to the first song that I’ll link, ‘Hi Ren’), he suffered from Lyme Disease but it went undiagnosed for about 5 years. Through this time he openly battled with depression and physical illness. ‘Hi Ren’ partially addresses this and mental health more broadly. It’s a song which is almost beyond music. I really do believe he’s a very special artist.
The songs I’ve linked demonstrate two very different sides to his genre straddling musical ability/talent. Please don’t give up on Hi Ren (or the Tales of… tracks) as you need to get to the end of them for them to really hit home. You might think you’ve heard the internal dialogue style before but, trust me, persevere! Slight trigger warning, the Tale of Violet is bleak but powerful. The other two tracks I’ve linked are, as I’ve said, very different and a further display of his vocal and music abilities.
If you’ve made it this far then well done and I’d love to know what you think. Worth noting that these are all performed live.
I so hope some of you will watch (and enjoy) these!!

Could have picked any number of tracks but I love his bassline on this, and the video is a cracker.
