Remember Dragoโs challenge of the 36 Chambers series? Well, we have come to book seventeen, after the likes of JonOne and Maรฏ Lucas, Logan Hicks, Mike Giant, Nick Walker, and WK Interact we now turn the page to Italian stencil masters Sten & Lex. They too, enter the collection and express their innovative style and technique through the use of black, white and only one color. In ninety-six pages they demonstrate their newest work, a few photographs that document their evolutionary journey, and a brief text written by the hands of the artists themselves sans the snobbery of critics, curators, and know-it-alls.
The seventeenth book of Dragoโs 36 Chambers Series โStencil Posterโ represents the most recent developments in their work. Sten and Lex have left the early days of their Hole School style to create what we see today, a technique that they refer to as Stencil Poster. They have transitioned from dots to lines to produce the striated faces that watch silently from city buildings. Somewhat humble and a bit inquisitive, these nameless portraits express the same scrutiny and brazen nonchalance whether they are watching from the street or from the white walls of a gallery.
Sten and Lex are currently in New York preparing for their show Portraits with Gaia at the Brooklynite Gallery. Be sure to check out their latest and greatest at Brooklynite from October 16th until November 6th, 2010 as well as their new book available exclusively at the opening and on www.dragolab.com.
