Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by Coach on Oct 18, 2010 23:15:52 GMT 1, cg - best wishes mate.
Mike, superb photos - rarely have I enjoyed looking through show photos as much as those.
There is something very disturbing about the sight of hyperdermic needles in an old enamled tin tray.
The instalations looked wonderfully disturbing. Looks like this was an amazing show. Congrats all involved. c

Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by ricobenfico on Oct 20, 2010 23:22:57 GMT 1, We hope this latest newsletter finds everybody well. First of all we would like to thank everybody who has shown support or attended the first solo exhibition of Dale โVerminโ Marshall and helped to make the 'Room 101' show at The Emporium, Bristol the amazing success that it has been. The response to the show has been totally overwhelming with all 101 canvases selling within an hour on the opening night. Despite this, people have revisited in huge numbers and are still coming through the doors to experience the show which really is a โmust seeโ with two amazing installation rooms as well as an amazing body of 101 paintings! We are still open on Thursday and Friday of this week. And then we will be taking down the 101 canvases to wrap up for collection on Saturday/Sunday.
A book has been produced by Dale entirely for the Room 101 show. Itโs a lovely little collectorโs item, measuring 15 x 10cm, which documents the trials, tribulations and ultimate success of Dale vn Marshall and gives a real insight on what the show was really all about and his battle with mental illness. The book has 16 pages of images of Dales art work, scribbled thoughts and what mental illness meant for Dale plus 5 limited edition postcards and is must have for visitors to the show and fans of Vermin art everywhere. It comes in a signed and stamped edition of 101, tagged with the vermin logo and signed VN on the back priced @ ยฃ20.00 each and also a stamped, unsigned edition of 101 priced @ ยฃ10.00. These are available now on the Art-el Gallery website www.art-el.co.uk/collections/vermin-room-101
Donโt forget that there are six show pieces currently still open for closed bids, for more details please do not hesitate to contact us at all@art-el.co.uk.
The making of the show is documented (and continues to be up-dated) with photographs on the Art-el Gallery Blog artelgallery.wordpress.com/vermin-room-101/ and there are lots more photoโs on our flickr www.flickr.com/photos/27892381@N04/sets/72157625040477337/

Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by Coach on Oct 21, 2010 22:53:36 GMT 1, Got my book today Mike - thank you very much. Love it. Looking through the book prompted me to look through the pics of the 101 pieces again. Previously I had seen these as abstracts, that I found particularly pleasing, and somewhat disturbing (always good in art imo). Then I got to wondering, (and my apologies if this is either utter bollix or was obvious to everyone else) whether most of the paintings are images of cracks. In particular cracks in the mind.
Anyway, enough wittering - great book, delighted with it. Thanks. c

CG Hope all has gone well and you are on the mend Brother.
Good observation Coach. It's fantastic that so many people see so many different things in these. Essentially they all contain the 'Vermin' letterform but after that It's all down to individual interpretation.
Glad to hear the book arrived promptly and that you have enjoyed the read.
Last chance for closed bid exhibition pieces and exciting news that Dale will be producing the next 'Don't Panic' poster

Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by buffin on Oct 28, 2010 13:41:01 GMT 1, The show was top quality. I loved the whole concept. The installations were really intense. Loads of great paintings. It was all a bit too manic when the show opened, So I went outside for a walk around and went back later when it had calmed down and the show had sold out. I went back today and had the whole place pretty much to myself. A much more enjoyable way to view the Art on show. I would highly recommend having a look to any of you who get the chance. What a lovely way to spend a weekend. I made a couple of purchases(2 of the last 4 hot pies left at Pieminster). Oh and did I mention the golf?. Been a bit quiet today CG !!. Silky- whilst you may be right regarding some of the work ending up on ebay. I feel that comment really lowered the tone. Everyone involved in this show worked their nuts/tits off. Were you suggesting that the show only sold out because of people buying to resale?. I knew many people in the queue and I can't see many of them selling at all. I reckon there will be a lot less for sale on ebay than you think. I know you said you didn't like Vermins work(apart from the background), but I reckon until you've seen it in the flesh its difficult to fully understand and appriciate it. I also know your unlikely to be making your way to the show, but if your around these parts at all you really should pop in.
Don't follow ebay much so have these been all over the bay as was suggested?

Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by marshal on Nov 1, 2010 15:08:03 GMT 1, Hi.. I'd just like to say thanks for the massive support of the forum people attending and buying at the Room 101 show. I would just like to say a personal big thanks to Mike and Stef for their sheer hard work for making Room 101 a sold out show. I wish Mike to get better as he is ill right now and I am giving him a big pat on the back for all the hard work.. As he said to me 1 week ago - This show has got the better of us all......
A last word: I am leaving this forum without hardly ever commenting, I find the moderating of the forum pathetic, bias, or bias in the way that this forum has promoted everyone bar Art-el and myself. We never asked for any type of promotion and quiet frankly we have never needed it. It was just, from reading other peoples comments on here that made "ME' think Ok thats how it is. Like my work or not (and sometimes I cant get to grip with it myself) someone pointed out that the Dale vn Marshall thread had quite an amount of page views. There were people who bought work and are supporting what we have done and would of maybe liked to see it included in the newsletter. I have come to the conclusion you made a conscious decision to leave us out because of personal reasons with Mike which is a shame. Mike will now give me a ticking off for writing this but I will deal with that when it comes.
Please (members) dont reply, its just I need to air my opinion. Silky you can now justifiably delete my account but please leave the Art-el account open here so Mike can give his opinions freely and promote - just like anyone else!! As Mike says 'Don't be bitter be better' .... peace

Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by sid on Nov 4, 2010 12:11:44 GMT 1, Interesting Interview as well
Youโve recently achieved great success with your 101 exhibition, with all 101 paintings selling out within the first hour. What made you think of and start the project? It was a case of getting over excited really, my first collection of work sold within six hours on-line through Art-el Gallery. Mike (Art-el) phoned me and said โOK, whatโs next home slice?โ I replied with โ101 canvases in 101 days โ Room 101โ. Heโs like, โAre you crazy? I know you have been mad butโฆโ It came about from the novel 1984 by George Orwell, I drew many personal parallels with the story in relation to my own experience in a mental institution. I read the numbers โ101โ as โlife death rebirthโ, very deep, hard to explain almost, but this was portrayed in the exhibition. You completed 101 paintings in as many days, where did you find the inspiration to keep you going through it all? There was a lot of talk throughout the whole preparation of this exhibition. As it was being hyped, it was gathering interest along the way so I knew I had to produce a good show. I had a personal story and I had unswerving faith, but it was hard. I had a lunch time pint break! I would pull out my little impressionism book that I carry around with me, read, look at the brushstrokes, get inspired and paint another piece in the afternoon. I was painting two paintings per day. I donโt think I could have been in the studio for 8-10hrs for three months without that half an hour headspace. Was there a particular message you were trying to convey with the collection? The installations were the way to deliver the message. Many visitors to the exhibition said that after seeing the installation pieces they looked at the paintings in a completely different light. The paintings were a gradual learning curve of progression, inspired by the slick styles of the late 1800s, but mark making the letter form โverminโ within every painting (hence, fine art of graffiti). The work became more abstract as my artistic skills were developing. Overall I just wanted to do something different. In the current climate of pop art graffiti I wanted to explore something that no-one else was doing. I took a risk and it paid off, I put myself back into the space that I found myself in just over 10 years ago. It was about bringing my unreality from the mental institution into reality, a celebration. What would you say your favourite painting of the collection was? There were a quite a few that I really didnโt want to sell. Some that I felt emotionally attached to. It would be hard to pick out a personal favourite, it was a journey from start to finish writing 'vermin'... my taste changes from day to day, and they look different at different times. Your paintings look at home both on a hung canvas and a crumbling brick wall. Do you consider yourself a graffiti artist or something else entirely? I donโt consider myself a graffiti artist. I come from a graffiti background, painting on the streets since 1986. I enjoy painting letterforms but times have changed. Many people who label themselves graffiti artists now are actually far from it. I hate labels. I practice graffiti but I am far from being a vandal. I am an artist and not a cloneโฆ. You have a history of quite serious mental health problems. Do you use the experiences you collected during those times when creating and planning your work? The tag โverminโ is very deep for me on a personal level. Iโve actually lived my name, the label that I chose. I have been lucky enough to step away from vermin and create true art around it, using my story and my experiences in dealing with depression and mental health. Seriously, when you are young and choose a tag, how many other artists can stand up and say I have lived that name? Itโs something that I chose, and question, did it choose me? I chose this life didnโt I? The poster youโve done for us is one of your slightly more aggressive pieces. What was going through your mind when you created it? It was my first painting on the back of the show. For the first time I was able to just go a bit crazy on a much larger scale with no serious time constraints I just kept layering the work and let the piece take its course. Forceful brushstrokes. I am feeling the abstract expressionism of the 50s at this moment, artists like Willem De Kooning and Joan Mitchell for example. Are you happy with the outcome? Yes, Iโm pleased with the outcome. It was good to paint on a larger scale rather than the restricted canvases that I worked on throughout the exhibition. What do you want people to think when they see the poster? Thatโs a hard question, but Iโd like people to think what they want to think. When asked to do the poster I considered painting a pop style poster to advertise myself as a brand, then I realised that is everything that I am not. I really hope people like it and see some sort of intenseness from where I have come from as an artist. I am an emotional person and I think greatly about beauty but also think heavily about the darker moments in life. Iโm still and always will be a paranoid person. What have you got coming up after this exhibition? Are you working on another collection? Maybe an international commission? Iโm currently working on 10 pieces to go to the US at the end of November as part of a group show. There are a few projects in the pipeline for abroad next year, along with a further solo show following on from Room 101, where the plan is to exhibit a new body of original paintings here in the UK in 2011. Are you planning on doing anything in London? Something that we could check out? I have nothing planned in London at this point, but I always enjoy visiting and seeing what everyone else is doing up there.
Interesting Interview as well
Youโve recently achieved great success with your 101 exhibition, with all 101 paintings selling out within the first hour.
