I'm pretty gutted I'm not going to get to see it in the flesh. He's always been a very talented guy but his ideas, technical skills and execution seem to have taken a big leap forward while he's been out in the States.

In general I love this style of abstract work but It must just be me as I really don't see the talent. Although I like several pieces in the preview, a few posted here and in previous shows he just doesn't have the wow factor in my eyes.
It just seems like too many other artists work, (past and present), but a distilled, not very skilled and if I am brutally honest anyone with paint a palette knife and half an ounce of skill possibly could accomplish.
If someone would shed some light and maybe explain why they think his work is so great please feel free to enlighten.

It talks to me of life and troubles, expressing the pain and understanding of it. But that's just me.

I've done very well thanks Freeview, lets not make this personal.
But I really don't see what me going to art college has to do with this or you.
I am a graphic designer, but have dabbled in all aspects of art from sculpture, ceramics to fine art and textiles.
I am sure I could accomplish something on a simlar line as this, not that I wish to.
I paint because I enjoy it and am in the very privelaged position that I enjoy my work. I was only asking why people rate and like his work, as I am maybe missing something.

My thoughts exactly. I posted something similar when 101 show was discussed here, just not quite so erudite as you deputy.
I saw it as the development of a tag into cracks, possibly in the mind.

As the work continues to grow, dale is developing away from the core idea, new threads continue to occur from where it began. Adding colour, scale, texture, larger scenes of distress and hope, new scenes and places come together. I find his work in turns fascinating, unsettling and filled with hope.

If we all liked the same artists then it'd be a pretty boring world and none of us would actually be able to get our hands on the works we love. Without meaning to be rude, I find the 'I could paint that' argument a little redundant; partly because when you see Dale's recent work in the flesh you realise just how technically accomplished he is but mostly it's because that's the same argument that my Dad uses to dismiss all art which has been painted since Constable popped his socks.

anyways, seeing pics of his work on here and reading up on him got me interested - so, sometime ago i bought this tiny little book of his ('101 I55ue5') - it was a most powerful tiny book for me (quite moving) - no need to echo DD's comments below, but spot on!

I bet many people can copy Picasso. It makes me laugh when I hear people say : " I don't get it, my 3 year old can do the same thing". The thing with Picasso isn't the final product but the work to get there.
Same thing can be said about many different artists : Pollock's dripping, Rhyman's white on white, Rothko's painting..... There's thoughts & preparation that go behind there.
I agree that not everything isn't to everyone's taste but I can see more than just the image when I see Dale's work. It has different layers & it's really interesting to me.
