Walls with Wounds is a landmark exhibition by Dale vN Marshall, a Coventry University Fine Art graduate.
Originally a graffiti artist spray-painting the walls of Bristol under the tag โVerminโ, Marshall was sectioned in 1999 in one of Britainโs oldest asylums, St Lawrenceโs Hospital in Cornwall. Walls with Wounds draws inspiration not only from graffiti and Marshallโs time at St Lawrenceโs, but also from his studio, a former Victorian workhouse in North Wales, its decaying walls inscribed by children over 100 years ago.
Each painting is inspired by a dramatic memory and represents a healing journey through physical destruction and repair. Marshallโs layered, multi-media works consist of a symbolic language of abstract expression and mark making. The result is a series of vibrant, powerful works documenting his personal journey from rebellion to rehabilitation.
Marshall strikes a balance between the frightening and the beautiful by accepting and embracing his past. These raw, emotive paintings show that hope and redemption are possible, whatever darkness may lie beneath our scars.

The images which have been posted online over the last few months look fantastic and I'm really looking forward to seeing them in a venue which will really do them justice. The Herbert have put on some really impressive shows over the last couple of years like 'Caught In The Crossfire' show.
There's some pictures of Dale's work at the bottom of the Herbert's page about the show and they look incredible; I especially like 'Game Theory'. I don't know how to embed their photos on the forum but the page is here.

It was interesting to visit his studio and listen to him explain his methods and influence. A great bloke and in my opinion one of the most exciting artist around.

Not sure at the moment about any PVs. Might be worth becoming a friend of the museum in order to receive additional info. They seem quite a progressive and insightful organisation to support in any case.

Indeed. Hoping to meet some of you good folks at the opening. I've been looking forward to this show for a long time; definitely going to be worth the trip up to The Herbert. As you say Bram, I think the scale and texture of Dale's work means it really does need to be seen in the flesh.

Dale Marshall ๐ฌ๐ง Vermin โข New Paintings โข Exhibition News, by hlarmy on Dec 20, 2013 14:16:33 GMT 1, Back in September, Dale announced that he would be releasing a new series of drawings in October. Unfortunately, at the 12th hour he had to cancel the sale for reasons beyond his control.
His upcoming three month exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum promises to mark the start of a very exciting 2014, and will see Dale working under new direction and management (Vanessa Brodrick - VB Fine Art). He is also in advanced discussions to return to the US for a second solo show next Summer (further details to be announced in the New Year).
Dale has asked me to comment that he is more than aware that he would not be embarking on such an exciting 2014 without the support of many members on here. In order to give a little back, he would like to give away three drawings from the series to forum members. However instead of opening this up to the masses and clogging up the forum he has chosen to do things a little differently.
Each of the forum members who have posted above ** END ** in either this thread or the one linked below will be entered into a draw to win a drawing from the series. Dale would like to thank these members, especially considering most of them have consistently made the effort to show their support for Dale and his work on this forum in recent years:
