Mr. Brainwash "Shoe" Print | Friday 12th November, by twist65 on Nov 9, 2010 18:48:35 GMT 1, I like the animated gif best. If the actual prints did that I'd buy one. They look like Ian Browns trainers from after those classic Pollock-ified Stone Roses press shots back in the day. Which actually makes this the nicest thing i've ever said about MBW!

Mr. Brainwash "Shoe" Print | Friday 12th November, by meatbag on Nov 9, 2010 21:03:49 GMT 1, what size are you Steve? these remind me of Dave White's 'Sneaker' collection that went on to be used by Nike about 5/6 years ago...
yep. Clearly a Dave White rip off. Nobody does kicks better then Dave White.

Mr. Brainwash "Shoe" Print | Friday 12th November, by pcant on Nov 12, 2010 21:21:58 GMT 1, There are already 7-8 of them on eBay, which begs the question: Is anyone buying these because they like them, or is his market almost entirely flippers at this point? And if so, is anyone buying from the flippers?

Yeah it seems like for every 10 after-market buyers(if that), there are 100 Flippers

Mr. Brainwash "Shoe" Print | Friday 12th November, by raiden on Nov 13, 2010 0:49:15 GMT 1, Surely it's along the same lines as Jasper Johns Savarin Coffee Cans with brushes. This is most certainly bloody brilliant!
Except this work was done done 50 years later, and while the Jasper Johns work was freehand, this is essentially a screen print paint by number.
But other than that and probably another 20 - 30 differences, sure.
Oh and I forgot one other glaring difference: Jasper Johns was a genius, and MBW can't paint.
While I commend you for your knowledge of Jasper John works, I would say there are many other artists to draw an more apt comparison to this work. I always thought that MBW is the Steve Kaufman of the Urban Art movement and Steve has tons of screen prints of brands that he colored in.
---
Look I think this is one of MBWs better works, at least it reflects his surroundings, namely that his studio is two blocks away from LA's biggest vintage Nike store.
There is at least some recognition of the collectible value of old Nikes in the work - so its one of him most conceptually cohesive prints of his career.
And it reflects an LA and specifically Melrose culture where limited edition painted editions of Nikes are sold - and the store by his studio features these in a glass case.
In this sense, its a work that is very attune with his environment.
---
I will say that given that this is has an original acrylic component and so well reflects the ethos of MBW, it would be a work more important to his cirriculum vitae than the vast majority of his other screen prints.
But I echo all the other sentiments - particularly the "fad is over" sentiment.

YET ON CASTING STAFFY MIND BACK TO ALL THOSE BORING AFTERNOONS OF LISTENING TO OWNER BANGING ON ABOUT ANGST OF POP VS CULTRUAL RELEVANCE. STAFFY THINKS THAT MBW MINDLESS TIT & JOHNS MILDLY TALENTED
