Dran • Learning To Fly, by anthoz on Dec 15, 2010 18:23:14 GMT 1, This image has stopped me from buying the Exhibit print... I simply adore the image, the simplicity, the aesthetics of the print. Looks like the newspaper is pasted on so I am assuming varying hand finishes? Will these be an in-store only release?

He was in M&S last saturday rigging up various designs. Will try and post some pics later tonight unless somebody beats me to it...

possibly....but to produce 250 semi-unique handfinished pieces (on 3 great platforms) is a great effort and a good showing for DRAN - not sure when I've last seen such an effort in one go...

On the current scale, single colour screen print, hand finished, small but only an edition of 50! Hmmm £175?

Dran • Learning To Fly, by faute on Dec 15, 2010 22:13:15 GMT 1, possibly....but to produce 250 semi-unique handfinished pieces (on 3 great platforms) is a great effort
Sure, but, I agree with the the other guy. And maybe too much effort...I really hate this concept. I feel it like forcing the artist to make something, which looks unique, in order to have the right product for the market at a particular point of time.
I remember when they did the Mickey with BAST, where all would look different. I had really look at BAST stuff and bought prints. And suddenly there was 180 people who seemed really totally fan. Because, for sure, I did not buy. People were explaining how it was fantastic and cheap, because hand-finished, semi-unique and blablabla...At, 1000$ and then £ on ebay, it was a bargain, etc...But, most of these prints were not good...And the price of the print got divided on the secondary market at the end...And many did not get the right picture of the work...And I'm not sure these prints helped on the long run...
These DRAN prints are different. But, if you do 250 pieces that quick, I think you do illustration. Nothing less, nothing more. It can be nice, but I cannot take that very seriously. Personally, I rate Dran. I have not bought before. Now, it would take years before I would look at it again (but I don't put the fault on him). I might be an exception, so who cares?
I believe it's not easy to put a show and sell stuff and bring money. So, I don't give lessons.
But, when I feel pieces are made to make it different (which is the case from the pictures above). When I read more about hand-finishing, and how much it's hand-finished and uniqueness than the piece, I would have real trouble to buy. Good effort. Sure. Realistic? Will that help in the long run?
Sorry about the length. I so much hate this concept. I do like MBW maybe simply because how much he made fun of the hand-finishing...This is more elaborate, sure...But, how much time did he have to make more than 250 art pieces?
(Of course, if you like a piece, it should not change)
