Modern Design - Urban Art, by guest2 on Jan 11, 2008 13:01:22 GMT 1, Following on from Carls request for Eames chairs, and Romanywg knowledge of sourcing such things and Harveyn addiction to chairs I thought I'd start a thread which incorporates both art and modern design.
So to kick off, here is my Shep Fairey Angel Davis Retired Stencil above a 1950's stag (british made) desk with a 1940's alvar aalto stool for Finmar (finnish) with a Christian Dell lamp (german) from the the same era.

A very rare piece and one of my favourite woods. Hans Wegner, a very important Danish designer. He made the chair that Kennedy insisted on, it's nicknamed 'the chair'. say hello to the Akta guys, I think I met them on my travels!

Would the person who just negged me please explain why?

Modern Design - Urban Art, by mikeinfected on Jan 11, 2008 16:38:45 GMT 1, nearly everything ? I always end up with extra bits, maybe I have yours ?
And love that "Milo Baughman (USA) burlwood sideboard with skyscraper sides" but rather suspect that you'd need to live in a minimalist, pristine palace and not in my everything-hoiked-into-the-corners domicile. It is very pretty though and I'd be tempted to decorate a whole living room/life around that one piece. I could have sworn it just winked at me in a very coy and alluring fashion.

Alot of fake Barcelonas out there. I've even seen fakes in sales like Christies! Make sure it's made by Knoll if you go down that route. The eames lounge chair and footstool (670 and 761) can be a minefield to purchase. Be very careful. But in my opinion the one to go for is def a vintage one and def a herman miller USA one. Black leather with rosewood is how Eames intended it. The early ones are feather filled while the mid 60's and above are foam filled. The early ones tend to have a dark rosewood where the laster rosewoods have amore stronger grain. I like the early ones of course!
If you do want one, email me any questions cos you can make big mistakes with these and waste alot of money.

Ok here's a dilemma...how would you feel if Banksy offered to stencil it ?

Inside or out ?
Actually it would be a huge plus because Brad Pitt is both a huge fan of Banksy and of Design/Architecture. He has some amazing pieces of furniture most notably the Lady desk by Rene Herbst

Modern Design - Urban Art, by guest2 on Jan 11, 2008 17:26:40 GMT 1, Here is my Eames group chair with my neate. Probably from the 60's, nice black leather on a lounge base with swivel facility. Never buy a fixed base one!!!!
This is the same chair as they use on Mastermind except I think their's is a newish vitra edition where mine is a vintage Herman Miller one.

if it ain't Rosewood, it ain't an Eames lounge....period
Me, I'm a Ron Arad, Maartan Baas, Tom Dixon, Droog Design, Marc Newson, Campana Brothers kinda guy in addition to a sick fascination with Marcel Breuer, old Laffer from Brazil, and Wolfgang Hoffman's work for Howell back in the 1930's.....
These days, only have a Breuer Laccio set and an Arad Tom Roc.......For the time being, I have to be content with books....

I will own that lounge chair and footstool and some point, I drool every time I see one and can't help myself but to sit in it. I prefer it in Cherry wood over any other finish or wood.
Does anyone know about the knock off of these, are they very similar as far as shape and design, I have 2 cats that would tear up the chair so I wouldn't mind getting a cheapish knock off as long as its almost exact to the original.

Yes I agree, they have to be rosewood. The wallnut looks pretty lame. As for Ron Arad, I had a pair of his rover chairs once. Funny old things!

Can't advise you on the fake ones, they are horrid. Don't buy one! Get the real deal or just get a different chair

Not sure what I'd with that Lady Desk though, might like a bit out of place with my beautiful red plastic letter trays from Viking (limited edition 7m, unsigned, no provenance - 89p or so) or my Barca coffee mug I use for me biros.
