Art story extraordinaire..., by Martin DK on Sept 10, 2010 23:39:04 GMT 1, So.... I have been collecting art for some years now, and like a lot of you guys on here I have also had my up and downs. The forum has always been good for me, and I have emailed with a lot of nice people on here who have helped me out from time to time, and many of you still do help out - you know who you are. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
However, a crazy thing happened this week, and I thought I like to share it with the board.
I have been a fan of danish artist called "HuskMitNavn/RememberMyName" for quite some time, I sadly dont own much by the guy but the passion for the work is there and have been there for awhile. I think its the colorful and quite naive way of his art that draws me to the work, old on the outside, but still young on the inside. His work makes me smile, and that whats its all about for me really. Also he's a mystery like Banksy, no one really knows who he is.
OK, started the morning up as usual on Monday, checking through the sites as usual. Got to the HuskMitNavn blog and saw that a few minutes before I had logged in he had posted something new on his blog - a treasure hunt. Its said "Treasure hunt. I just hid this drawing somewhere on the planet. Find it and it's yours". I didn't pay to much attention to it as last time he did it it was in the danish capital, and it was found within 1 hour.
Anyhow, the photos intrigued me. Somewhere on the planet he says, well I have the time I thought, so thought I could give it a go on google maps. Just had absolutely no idea where to start.
With this treasure hunt you where of cause given some clues, these where photos, and here are some of them.

There were more photos, they are as written earlier on his blog.
Sad thing though, I'm not so good at finding places, I dont know all the important places when I see a photo. So basically, when the photos came up I had absolutely no idea where it was.
I PM'ed "Sacked" here on the forum and asked him if it was in London, and I got the reply: "YES!". I of cause didn't trust him. ;D
So I actually went on google pictures and just wrote "skyscraper" to see if I could find some that looked like the ones on the artists photos. That didn't go well, so then I tried to search for "Bridge", and after awhile I knew it was Brooklyn Bridge on the photo above. So I went to google maps, all the way down to street level, and took it feet by feet. I knew I had to find a place high up, with water and some trees etc. But I just could not work it out. Time passed, I wanted to give up, but I kinda got sucked into it all.
So, by chance I went to the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge on google maps, and BANG - it was so weird, then I had almost the same view as the artist did when he took the photo above with the bridge, my heart started to race.
I knew where it was, but had absolutely no idea what to do about it. What would you do?
I needed to find someone in New York to help out. But it was a race. The finder of the drawing had to write the artist when it was found, and since the artist has fans of his work all over the globe, well it could happen any time. So during all of this I also had to keep updating the aritst's blog to see if it was found.
Then I got an idea. Rae - Brooklynite Gallery. However, I knew he just had opened the Eelus show, and I had noticed that there had been some issues up to the show, so I had no idea if he had the time. Also, I have never met Rae, would it be ok to ask about something like this, send an email with the words, "hey, please drop everything in your hands and go treasure hunting for me". I know Rae, he has helped me before, but this was not something I would normally ask people to do. But I couldn't help it, almost 3 hours had passed now, I had to do something about it.
I emailed Rae, told him this was in New York, can you see where it is. I didn't get all the details in the first email so had to make a second. After sending the emails I started biting my nails. Then....... I realized it was in the middle of the night in the US... crap!!! So when had the artist dropped of the drawing - the day before, could it have been found already?
I emailed Rae again - and in my naive way told him that he had to wake up and go find the treasure!
Then the hours went by, almost six hours later Rae replied. He thought it was a funny thing, but he had so much work, he had his daughter in the gallery that day, couldn't just close it all down and head out. Also, it was not possible to just drive up to the place and pick it up, you had to walk a long way, traffic, and all sorts.
So close, but still half the world away. I replied, "no worries Rae, I had to ask, hope you didnt mind".
I closed down the computer, had to forget about it.
then.......!!!!!
A couple of hours later I got back on the computer, there was an email from Rae. No words in the email, just a photo - his daughter was standing there, looking beautiful in the sunny weather with the drawing in her hands! My heart seriously jumped.
![](http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LEokfE9lJ6w/TIXoAGo7jDI/AAAAAAAACbQ/7gaUiV839YI/s400/Tegning1.jpg)
So, the thing that happened was, Rae re-read my email, he could feel this was important for me. While reading my emails his daughter came up to him and asked, "daddy, want to go treasure hunting?" they do that often in the gallery, so Rae was used to the question, but it was like it was meant to be.
Rae printed out all the photos from the website, closed down the gallery, took his girl in his hand and went out in the fine weather outside. Its was not easier to get the drawing. When they finally found the place on the photos, you could not just take it if it was still there, you had to climb a fence, and the drawing had been pushed so far into the structure that you could not see it or almost not reach it. However, Rae kept on trying, and with the flesh wounds on his arm to prove it he got the drawing out with his finger tips.
The Drawing is now on its way back to Denmark, to me.
We may be past the drawing here, but I think this is an amazing story about a guy helping another guy out, just because. Its a celebration of the feeling you get from the art you like, and its a proof that you can do anything you set your mind to.
I want to thank the artist for making me feel this way about his art, to Rae and his family, his little daughter for asking her dad to go treasure hunting, and for looking so beautiful holding up the drawing on the photo. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Art story extraordinaire..., by Martin DK on Sept 11, 2010 0:01:51 GMT 1, I can only take credit for posting this on the forum and the hours spent on google maps, the credit goes to the artist and Rae and his family. Plus of cause Sacked for pointing me in the right direction ;D
I have gotten a lot of help from people on here over the years, these people also deserve a thread like this by me, but I thought this was a bit special since it goes from one side of the world to the other, so I thought I wanted to share it.
Here is the drawing:

Art story extraordinaire..., by rosstierney on Sept 11, 2010 1:16:08 GMT 1, My smile gradually got bigger from when I first read the words 'treasure hunt', all the way to the end. What a great idea by the artist. Mad respect to Rae and of course, congratulations to your good self. You will find it is now more than a piece of art. A visual story you can rely on to lift your spirits if/when need be. Enjoy.

Art story extraordinaire..., by Deleted on Sept 11, 2010 1:47:17 GMT 1, wow. This might be the best thing I've read on here, ever. what a story. Yes, I might be a sensitive and sentimental guy, but this is the real deal.
With the little girl in the story this almost sounds too good to be true, the innocence of a kid that helps finding a treasure.. No storyteller can come up with things like this.
Thanks for sharing,

Art story extraordinaire..., by Brushstrokes 75 on Sept 11, 2010 4:12:15 GMT 1, Big up for Rae!
In my opinion, what is more impressive in this story is all the excitement of martin telling and living it. I can totally feel your passion and excitement only by reading your story!
Nice gesture from the artist! Nice gesture from Rae helping out (though he didn't really have to)! Nice gesture from Martin for telling the story this way!
As Ross said, you gonna love this drawing forever. It's the kind of art that you'll keep forever no matter what its value is. I already imagine your happiness everytime you look at it!
Thanks again for sharing!
[By the way, on the flight Board in the second picture, you can see that the "treasure" is pointing to JFK (which NYC airport!)]
Big up for Rae!

Art story extraordinaire..., by Poppy Sunshine on Sept 11, 2010 8:36:08 GMT 1, Brilliant !!
Really made my weekend.
The photo of Raes beautiful daughter with the treasure is just perfect.
I've never read such a fantastic short story true or otherwise.
When do you start making the film and writing the book? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
