Are print numbers important to you?, by Zippy on Dec 23, 2009 1:06:28 GMT 1, I never used to be bothered about the numbering of a print. It did not matter to me if I received a low number, high number or anywhere in the middle as long as it was an image I wanted.
However... I have just bought a print I have wanted for a while and it has a very interesting / good number. This has now changed my view slightly as I am even happier with the print.
Are you a number freak?
Do you have a number Fetish ie you always try to get number XX on any new release?
Do you release and re-grab from POW to try to get a double digit number or one towards the end of a run?
Time to 'come out' and tell all ;D

Are print numbers important to you?, by Guest on Dec 23, 2009 1:12:44 GMT 1, never been that concerned about numbering, the lowest print number i had was 1 and the highest was 60034, loved them equally as much. but if it bothers you that much i suggest one of these, it obviously ruins the resale value, but your OCD always comes first. ;D

Are print numbers important to you?, by kjzimm on Dec 23, 2009 2:15:51 GMT 1, I've read that lower are more desirable than higher or APs. The article was in reference to Christie's or Sotheby's fine print sales.
Here it is... "Possibly, Sothebyโs and Christieโs attract better quality versions of โidenticalโ works (e.g., prints with lower print numbers, prints in better condition and prints with a more important provenance) or are able to attract a larger number of potential bidders. Both factors would tend to yield higher prices."
www.law.uchicago.edu/files/files/76.Landes.Ganz_.pdf
Also read somewher that people prefer even over odd, but can't find that article. I've found that I like even numbers better, but it wouldn't make any difference in the end. If I like it, I'm buying regardless of number.

Are print numbers important to you?, by oneeye on Dec 23, 2009 2:24:29 GMT 1, I'm definitely partial to lower numbers. Would I pay more for a lower one? Probably not. But it definitely makes it more enticing. If given the choice of a 32 vs a 132 of say a Banksy signed edition of 150, which way would you go? No brainer for me.

Are print numbers important to you?, by kjzimm on Dec 23, 2009 3:37:20 GMT 1, Shep must have the grip of a gorilla while holding a pencil (all puns intended). Then again, he doesn't seem to use his hands for the art, unless you count moving a mouse around.
At least Banksy has been using an Exacto knife for his manual dexterity exercise--set back by the spray can finger (where the hand locks up)!

Are print numbers important to you?, by Heavyconsumer on Dec 23, 2009 4:36:52 GMT 1, A forum member has 666 of one of Hirst's "For the love of god" prints, which I thought was also very cool!
Personally I ain't really that bothered, although I understand that very low numbers are more sought after in fine art circles from speaking to a couple of collectors I know.

Agreed, it's not like Shepard is known for hand cutting rubylith.

I'm new to this. All of mine are still in the shipping tubes, some never opened as I'm not living in the place I will hang them. Therefore nothing will be framed right now, maybe for tens of years.
Should I be moving them to a flat portfolio? Is that one of those black things that the architecture students use?

I would not leave them in a tube for too long.

Are print numbers important to you?, by kjzimm on Dec 23, 2009 8:00:12 GMT 1, Good, thanks. I never intended on removing them until framed--maybe years.
So, flattening them...should I let them "rest" with something holding them open for a few days? How about dust? My house is very dusty--probably laundry & such. Should I cover them while they're resting? And, is a portfolio one of those black things with the zippers? I've never seen inside one--do they have pages to separate the prints? Sorry to be so dense, but I won't have a chance to check one out until next year as I'm on the road with work.

Are print numbers important to you?, by Guest on Dec 23, 2009 8:18:11 GMT 1, you have answered all your own questions correctly! first remove prints form tubes, the quicker you do this the easier the next stage becomes, then let them rest naturally, no weights. then cover with tissue paper to stop dust and weigh down, and when completely flat store in a portfolio, which is one of those zipper thingys with archival sleeves inside!!
;D
