Buy something other than a Donut..., by jakek on Jul 30, 2009 12:37:51 GMT 1, So, some people won, some people didn't, some people like the lotto, some people like f5ing, and some people are already trying to flip...
That summarises the last 50 pages of the Donut threads but i thought i'd try and bring the conversation back to the art and get an interesting new thread going.
I understand this is a Banksy forum but there is an almost unlimited supply of great art available for those of us that didn't get lucky.
Not winning might mean not having to beg, steal and borrow the ยฃ450odd for the Donuts print, but some people might have got this amount put aside. And some might have even started saving the ยฃ1-3k that these will command on ebay (i'm not even going to join in the speculation).
So rather than fork out on the secondary market why not consider spending the ยฃ450-ยฃ3k on something else?
Yeap, i like the idea of having a signed banksy print but it's not just about the signature is it? Why not consider getting an unsigned older print for under ยฃ1k? If it's all about the resale value this might not be for you but the print runs of some of the older unsigned print runs compare to this combined Donut print run so at least that feeling of exclusivity is there.
Originals are available from loads of artists (new and established) from less than ยฃ100. Last week I got a couple of the elph sketches for about that much each and they're awesome pieces. And if you're really thinking of spending a few grand on ebay for a donut then you'd get a whole lot of canvas for that much from some other great artists... (i would suggest a few of my favourites but i don't want this to be seen as me "hyping" anyone who i'm in to)
So what i'm saying is why don't we stop squabbling about the donuts print and just suggest some other works that people could spend the same kind of money on? There's a lot of new forum visitors here who i am sure would appreciate your/our insight into other artists...

Buy something other than a Donut..., by hlarmy on Jul 30, 2009 12:51:31 GMT 1, Absolutely agree, good post.
A print is a print and, if framed well, can look fantastic. However, Banksy prints are very expensive and although there is a pride factor involved with hanging a Banksy print, especially as his popularity rises, you can't beat originals in my opinion. For the same price as a secondary market Donut, you can buy some amazing paintings from such artists as Danny O'Connor, Remi Rough, Jaybo Monk, Damon Ginandes (to name a few I'm interested in - the list is endless).
My advise would be forget buying Donuts at ยฃ1k plus and purchase some large originals from up and coming artists. Plus there's also a good chance that in a couple of years it would have gone up in value, you could sell the original and purchase a Donut with the proceeds if you still want to (although many would argue on here, including me, that you shoudn't think like that when buying art ).

Buy something other than a Donut..., by Urban Cowboy on Jul 30, 2009 14:45:51 GMT 1, I like the work on the trinidad thread above, these are very similar but more expensive
www.quantumart.co.uk/artists/jessica-brown.html
Saw them at the London art fair a few years ago and was very impressed.
You can't go wrong with a Static 1/1 also in my opinion

Lets say you had ยฃ475 (the cost of donuts via ebay) and pocessed an open mind. You could an original abstract from Lil Joseph (and have enough change for a good night out) -

Spot on, a true classic in my eyes and a fantastic print framed. Its amazing how some works are taken for granted because of familiarity.

Buy something other than a Donut..., by jakek on Jul 30, 2009 17:59:43 GMT 1, That Lil Joseph is very Parla-esque. Very nice though.
In a bid to keep this thread going i thought i'd mention a few artists who i think do reasonably priced work but i've yet to take the plunge with...
Tom French (glad to see the name change from Toad) www.urbanangel.com/department/tom_french/ I do love detailed charcoal work and some of his smaller pieces are the same as a donut at source
BestEver again on urbanangel. i've not got anything as i have a few herakut pieces and this is a little similar but for ยฃ1400 (got to be less than a donuts on ebay for the first few months at least) this piece looks very impressive.
mr jago his work can get expensive on canvases but his paper work at stolen space is cheaper than a donut from pow and you'ld be getting an amazing unique piece. www.stolenspace.com/section.php?xSec=248&xPage=7
a few more ideas for you all with some cash to burn, and an attempt to bump this thread so we don't forget to stop the bickering about missing out.
