My advise would be to find find an artists that is relatively new & approach them directly with regards a commission. You get the experience of being involved in a piece of art created specifically for yourself, and take the piece home, extra special as not dfone as part of a show.
Failing that negotiate with galleries, ยฃ1000 should buy you work in the region of ยฃ1300 with some intelligent discussion and polite requests.

This is a great thread by the way. Funny to see how opinion has changed since the Banksy's were realised four years or so a go. An inevitiable and healthy migration though in my opinion.
