All the Mic's have gone... !, by wezzley on Jul 21, 2007 10:58:45 GMT 1, I go along with the non cynic view, as I experienced it myself...the 'procastination factor' - umming & arrring over such a big spend for months....then when they are nearly gone, it makes you stop faffing around and act before its too late. Being faced with the imminent prospect of never having them helps to focus the mind...! Anyways...missed out after all that

All the Mic's have gone... !, by tomhills1 on Jul 21, 2007 11:45:35 GMT 1, interesting thread. i think both lesroy and jpurcell are very much spot on and to some extent, in agreement. to the everyman money will always be a factor. i went in harvey nicholls a couple of years back and asked how much a t-shirt was. a nice, one-off hand finished jobbie and was told by the gentlemen on the shop floor "if you have to ask how much it is sir, then you're in the wrong shop".
i still loved the t-shirt, just could not justify spending a weeks wages on it.
so that plays in to jpurcell's theory of monetry and emotional value being intrinsicly linked. however, if it cost me a weeks wages at most other stores to buy a t-shirt then the choice would be purely aestetic.
lesroy's point exactly, when something is above and beyond all else around it and far exceeds all it's peers, then it is not only a brave man but also a wealthy one that goes ahead and buys it. and good luck to them. when the playing field levels up it turns into a choice of image, desire and equally still, price. the difference being, you can be a lot more confident the market won't come crashing down around you, and you can justify the extra expense as now being market value.
i know that was quite a vaugue analagy but hopefully some of it made some sense, even if i have actually added nothing to the debate as a whole. i see both sides, although for me they are in no way black and white.
nick, that was good for 8am! i'm good mate, i dread coming on this forum now though. i used to have art envy of AZA and one or two others. now there's you, mike, and others who seem to be raising the bar, both in purchase price and in the quality of your purchases/collections, i may as well give up. until my numbers come up anyway.
anyone want to donate a dirty deluxe to charity? (i'm the charity BTW) PM me ;D

All the Mic's have gone... !, by tomhills1 on Jul 21, 2007 11:58:59 GMT 1, i imbellished it slightly, he did wink, say that and then laughed whilst he told me he was joking. he had a point though, ยฃ250 which was about a weeks take-home back then.
more used to footballers and city boys than roofers i guess! funny enough, i've not been back in since then. ;D

All the Mic's have gone... !, by lastpost on Jul 21, 2007 12:17:04 GMT 1, I think you should have nutted him anyway. Little p***k! Anyway, good points made by all further up. I love Micallef's stuff...however unless you are rich beyond your wildest dreams, I think it is hard to justify spending maybe a quarter of the average man's annual salary on a print without future value in the back of your mind? If we are all honest...

5 minutes of CNN or any other international news programme tells me the worlds gone mad Carlo. 5K on a print tells me that at least some people have their priorities right

where's verbalkint when you need him? my guess is that the diamond 'dust' they talk about is not from your commercial jewel diamonds, but from the man made diamonds used in diamond drill bits and cutting equipment. verbal should know more than anyone on this, i reckon it would be almost impossible to get the significant amount of high-grade diamond dust you are led to believe these prints use, a'la the ยฃ50 million original .

All the Mic's have gone... !, by tomhills1 on Jul 22, 2007 18:23:02 GMT 1, I thought you roofers were well paid with danger money anyway
the most common cause of industrial fatalities: falls from heights. apart from scaffolders (idiots) we are the most at risk of death at work. fisherman are next, so when you hear of hero fireman or coppers etc in the papers, do well to ignore the hyperbole and big up the tradesman .
don't worry, i'll not pack in on this board, i just get a little dispondant when i hear what lesroy and mike have bought recently and the bits they have for sale - i can't even afford their breadcrumbs!!
seriously, good luck to anyone who can splash the cash at whatever level, i would like to be in a league akin to said bigboys but if whatever you're spending makes you happy then f*ckin' good luck to you. even if i had all the money in the world, i'm sure even that would not be enough. all part of the fun i guess, just a bit gutting when all you ever wish for is all in a weeks work for some, that's not even a dig either.
*green roofer*, not in the environmental sense either
