HAND STENCILLED TURIN SCAM, by jonpud on Jul 31, 2007 15:53:05 GMT 1, Don't think anyone could possibly neg you for selling again something you bought at aftermarket price! Its the ones who buy it for pennies with the sole intention of selling a day later for a profit. SBFO......how many up for sale on Ebay?
Fair play to you, hope you get a good price, would love it myself but done my nuts on 21stCL and signed LVC recently!
Good luck!

The respect issue is one of the things I guess you can expect when you actively ask people to neg you as you want to reach -1000, did you not see verbals request post a week or so ago?

It's not so simple though is it, they could have bought Dan Baldwin, Zbiok, Eelus all manner of stuff in fact that wouldn't sell for any or not much profit.

HAND STENCILLED TURIN SCAM, by corblimeylimey on Jul 31, 2007 18:00:27 GMT 1, I've 'got lucky' with a few purchases, but I'm not buying for investment, but for enjoyment, no money to be made from my Blek's or the Slinkachu I bought last week so thats about ยฃ750 worth of art just sitting on the wall, I don't care, I wanted them on the wall to look at. On the other hand some 'cheap' art I've bought like my Turin Scam was bought for ยฃ65 and is selling now for ยฃ700, the Mantis AFD ยฃ125 now worth over ยฃ400, and I got a Dead Che from AMP for free, that's probably worth near to ยฃ500. Other inexpensive prints haven't gone up much or at all, like Scorn - Tarot, Dolk - Officer Down, Kinsey - Gun, I could go on.
The point is it doesn't matter, I've got stuff I like, and most of it didn't cost very much.

Yeah BUT how long for? Still nice to know that some of your hard earned goes to a worthy charity, certainly made an element of difference to the flippers on LVC!!

HAND STENCILLED TURIN SCAM, by dgb133 on Jul 31, 2007 18:16:31 GMT 1,
It's mania really, this happens sometimes with art but it's pretty out of control right here.
I worry that all of this just becomes this self fulfilling prophecy kind of thing. Everyone saw what happened to Banksy and now everyone doesn't want to miss out on the next big thing and everyone is trying to predict who will be next. So when people start to see prices jump I feel they panic and buy in without really thinking. I worry that money, panic, fear and gread are the real motivators here. When the dust settles and we're into the 2010s let's all get back together and see what's left.
Micallef and Banksy will hold their values overall (although I won't be surprised if prices go flat or down sometime and soon.) But everyone else you mentioned, especially mantis (fine work but just way too derivative) are still complete speculation at this point. And once again the prices that there prints are already going for now - you could instead get signed prints by world reknowned artists with top notch pedigrees. Neate, I'm not sure about. But the prices for his work is way out of line with similar and more established artists too. I'd be careful everywhere you tread.
But what do I know

HAND STENCILLED TURIN SCAM, by worlddomination on Jul 31, 2007 18:19:20 GMT 1, Some interesting points. I buy for two reasons one if I like it and two if I think it's going to be a good investment. I looked at the market a while before I bought anything and bought some things that I went off rapido which I have lost a small bit of money on because I looked again at them and thought they were dross, however most of my collection which is probably meagre compared to some people on this forum I am well chuffed with and there are a lot pieces in there that have gone up like something stupid. I've got quite a bit of Blek which I like which has gone nowhere but I'm keeping it because I think time will tell with him and in the meantime I like it. I've started selling and have no problem with making a profit either it adds to the fun of it.That's just my viewpoint for what it's worth.

HAND STENCILLED TURIN SCAM, by babyford on Jul 31, 2007 18:28:29 GMT 1, Micallefs prices went crazy when someone post his Judgement day at a silly price and got it. The last couple of months the market has gone mad. Beejoirs and Mantis's work has seen a steep rise and much justified. Whom is next?

HAND STENCILLED TURIN SCAM, by dgb133 on Jul 31, 2007 18:32:25 GMT 1, Personally I think Baldwin has stronger long term prospects than Mantis and Beejoir. And the fact that his prints haven't exploded overnight I find reassuring actually. And I can get a Baldwin print at a price still that even if it becomes worthless won't kill me.

Disagree. Opus Underground hiked their prices up before anyone else shortly before the auction several weeks ago. The prices raised at that auction really set a benchmark when most of the eyestorm work went for about 4k. Then everyone went mad in anticipation of the LA show and forthcoming tour.

Let Baldwin be a lesson to some people, his prices did explode over night (doubled) before coming back down to earth, I wouldn't like to be someone who paid twice the original price for investment only to find that now they're worth half what was paid out.

Good point that I actually wasn't aware of. Seems as though his current prices seem fair. Although someone is trying to get a huge amount of money for some originals on ebay. Baldwin yes, is complete speculation though as far as long term prospects and price appreciation. (like most artists) But still might do well long term.
But yeah, this happens pretty often. Flavor of the week, all the rage one year, completely forgotten the next. Which of all these artists will still be around 10-20 years from now? Nobody knows but probably not many.
