If you had 5000 Pounds, by jfury on Aug 21, 2008 13:49:50 GMT 1, I have a general question for any forum members that wish to respond in an intelligent manner. If you had 5000 pounds in which to invest in prints, what would you buy? Would you buy 2 signed banky's, 3-4 micallefs signed micallef's or would you spread the investment out buying cheaper prints/originals of other artists (borf, eine, swoon, etc.). Just curious as to what members here think. This is an ongoing discussion I am having with my girlfriend.
uh oh I can see where this is going to

If you had 5000 Pounds, by Daniel Silk on Aug 21, 2008 13:54:11 GMT 1, ยฃ5,000
ONLY buy what you like of course
I would spend around ยฃ2,000 on a couple of original canvases from good up and coming artists. another ยฃ2,000 on limited Edition prints by well known artists in the ยฃ300-ยฃ600 sort of area. Then the last ยฃ1,000 on new prints that cost around ยฃ100 each, or less.

If you had 5000 Pounds, by graeme501 on Aug 21, 2008 13:55:26 GMT 1, for investment, u'd be safer putting it in the bank
if u have ยฃ5000 that u want to spend on art, and are willing to accpet that the return if u sold could go either way, then choose your favourite artist that sell originals for that price, and get 1

If you had 5000 Pounds, by carbon on Aug 21, 2008 13:56:43 GMT 1, oh jesus it still amazes me that people think like this, not "what do i like best?" or "what art will look best on my walls?"
do you really expect people to' respond in an intelligent manner' to this?
a lot of people here buy art cos they love art, i suggest you do the same, you want an investment look into stocks. persionly if im spending 5k it wont be on prints

If you had 5000 Pounds, by chazrico on Aug 21, 2008 14:03:44 GMT 1, Thanks for the wonderful advice "buy what you like". No shit guys.
I'm posted the question for a couple simple reasons...
I have been having this argument with my girlfriend who likes banksy and wants some of his work. I too like banksy but equally like bast, eine, borf, and many other artist. As well as having something we enjoy looking at, we cant agree on which artist might provide the best return on our investment. Obviously no one on this forum can predict the future prices of any artist. I was simply asking for some personal opinions of others who share similar interests in collecting prints.
If that offends any of you in any way- Fuck off

If you had 5000 Pounds, by carbon on Aug 21, 2008 14:16:59 GMT 1, lets say i or anyone here did know who would give you a guaranteed substantial return on any art investment. what would their be to motivate said person to share that trusted information with you?
because you asked? or because you told everyone to f**k off?

If you had 5000 Pounds, by Adamski on Aug 21, 2008 14:18:25 GMT 1, Ignore people who are moaning about you wanting to buy with investment in mind, you are perfectly entitled to spend your money how you wish. 5 grand is a lot of cash to most people and anyone who suggests you don't consider it carefully is an idiot. although always be prepared for the fact you may not make money, if it holds it's value then bonus
As has been suggested by others, try to find an original from one of your preferred artists, from experience, you'll find you get much more pleasure from it longer term.

You know what, I will be glad to fuck off.
Some on this board gave you not only very good advice but the advice of the best collector's out there - "buy what you like". It's very simple yet tends to be very effective.
If you are looking for investment advice go to a brokerage house. Perhaps the folks at sothebys could give you some sound advice. (sarcasm)
Unnecessary to take your tone. really.

EDIT: "Limey is an old American and Canadian slang nickname for the British, originally referring to British sailors."
What do you have against Sailors anyway?

It's a forum - they're entitled to their opinion... which you asked for and, to be honest the thread went exactly the route that all similar ones throughout the history of this form have gone. There was some good advice - which you didn't choose to see?!?
Oh... and a Neate or if you are really blessed a Parla
Now go and have a nice cup of tea and calm down

If you had 5000 Pounds, by jonpud on Aug 21, 2008 14:53:58 GMT 1, Perhaps if you had left out the word 'Investment' you might have found the responses a little more helpful!
You criticize everyone who says 'buy what you like' With all due respect that is the be all and end all with art, no point buying anything you don't like as you will never enjoy it hanging on your wall, nobody on here can advise you either, how can we tell you what YOU like?
Members on here show their art, they are proud of owning it and they love what they have, I for one enjoy being a member of this community but no one on here can force their opinions upon me.
Most people like Neate, I respect him for having a talent but to be honest I wouldn't have his work on my wall, and I wouldn't criticize in any way those who do. I like Nick Walker, there are many on here who don't, but that's what it's all about!
Your ยฃ5k will easily buy your Mrs a signed colour trolleys and leave you a shed load to buy art that you like, thus keeping you both happy, you don't need anyone on here to help you come to that conclusion!!
Come back when you have your prints and ask for different ideas about how to frame them, you might then find you fit in a bit more and there will be plenty of members willing to help you!

not sure whether that would be a good investment or not. it would depend how sick it made me i suppose.

If you had 5000 Pounds, by Michael Jacob on Aug 21, 2008 15:39:58 GMT 1, Id give 1500 Pounds to Crazy Jake (thats me) and become a financial partner to help fund the three upcoming screen prints.
3 prints, edition of 100 each = 300 prints
we could sell them for 30 Pounds each (which is hopefully a really good deal)
300 x 30 = 9000 Pounds!
50/50 means 4500 Pounds for you!
as always there is risk in any investment. please consult with your financial adviser (or wife in my case) before pissing any money any.
