what got you into Banksy???, by dodge on Jan 3, 2009 20:36:13 GMT 1, I haven't posted all that much lately -- i'm just starting to lose interest with all the talks of flipping, costs, the bickering, etc. however, with that said -- I was flicking through flickr and came across a great picture of Mr. B and it reminded me of what caught my interest in banksy and the street scene, and thought I would share. if any of you would like to share what captivated you about this guy or this scene, I would also love to hear -- I hope 2009 brings some great things to you all!
I went into the now sadly closed 'fourstore' in Durham and saw a Banksy 'LIITA' and Shepard Fairey 'High times'. I asked who it was by and that was it! I bought a 'High Times' later but still haven't got a Flower Thrower
Happy 2009 JB.

what got you into Banksy???, by muti on Jan 3, 2009 21:02:01 GMT 1, There is that very cool retro furniture store at the beginning of Columbia Rd in Shoreditch, I was walking past it many years ago and noticed a Banksy Queen Vic hanging up, had no idea who Banksy was but loved the image. I debated for half the afternoon wheather I should pay ยฃ70 for a piece of paper, I paid and have never looked back, now its an obsession getting out of hand, I want everything( well almost).

what got you into Banksy???, by speebe on Jan 3, 2009 21:32:25 GMT 1, I spent a few messy weekends in Bristol in the very late 90's early 00's and spotted a good few pieces while on my travels.
It was not long after I remember emailing the old cashformonkeys website to enquire about work for sale. I did get an email back but sadly wasn't able to buy an original.

what got you into Banksy???, by retardthebear on Jan 3, 2009 22:28:10 GMT 1, Saw a stencil outside Brixton Acdemy in 2000 when going to see B-boy championships. I think they were similar to the blur album cover or somethin though i may well be mistaken, took a half arsed interest as i thought he was amusing but didnt realise he'd release/d prints etc.

what got you into Banksy???, by toothfairy on Jan 3, 2009 23:38:50 GMT 1, First saw pulp fiction on the way to work from the No. 55 bus. In the morning I used to sit on the right hand side of the bus to get a clear view and on the way back I used to sit at the front to view smiley coppers on the bridge. Sad, but this was my daily ritual. Like redardthebear I had no idea he released prints back then.

what got you into Banksy???, by Ged on Jan 4, 2009 13:22:31 GMT 1, I was introduced to his work in 2005 by a good friend of mine and although I really loved his street work I didn't think it translated well to print. In fact it's only while I've been on here that I've gained an appreciation for his print work. If only I'd liked them back in 2005 when you could pick them up on POW for next to nothing, they didn't sell out in seconds and flipped minutes later ;D

what got you into Banksy???, by fuzzed on Jan 4, 2009 15:08:30 GMT 1, This thread got me thinking and I can't really remember how I first got into Banksy's work. I've always been interested in graffiti and street art and I somehow heard about Banksy and started viewing his work online around 2004ish. It wasn't until a couple of years later I thought about travelling around trying to see some work for myself.

what got you into Banksy???, by doublehelix on Jan 4, 2009 16:27:50 GMT 1, I ran a design studio and lived in Shoreditch in the late 90s and first became aware of Banksy when his pieces started to appear all over that area from late 1999 onwards. I then sought out info about him - this was before banksy.co.uk existed - and found some articles in magazines such as Squall, While You Were Sleeping, Venue etc.
Went along to his first London 'show' under the tunnel in Shoreditch in 2000, saw Si Mitchell's great 'Boom or Bust' short documentary on Channel 4 in 2001, picked up a copy of 'Banging you Head' the same year and have followed pretty much everything he's done since then, Cargo, Clink St, Turf War etc managing to pick up a piece or tree over the years.
Here's one of my snaps from back then, this was taken just around the corner from my studio:
Here's to another decade of banksy flavoured escapades.

what got you into Banksy???, by toothfairy on Jan 4, 2009 19:17:16 GMT 1, Actually I don't think pulp fiction was the first piece I saw. It might have been the various boxes outside Cargo. Remember being at a wrap party, getting stupidly drunk, going outside for fresh air (don't remember there being a courtyard) and seeing a monkey pointing a gun at me. Anyone got a photo. My early years in London are a bit hazy.

found pow, signed up to their mailing list & failed at the trolleys release
santas ghetto came along where i succeeded at the stop & search release
since then the genre's taken over my life!
