it's my favorite piece of all time. in fact i think there was a thread months ago about our favorite piece of art, and i said this.
it is an amazing image, and of course your pic only shows the main part of the tryptic cos there are doors that are painted too.
if you are interested, there is a beautiful book published by prestel written by hans belting, just about this one painting. it contains some amazing close up photos of the details - images that you just cant take in when you look at the painting as a whole.
anyway good call, my choice too. didnt mention it before cos still cant post pics.

This is such a tough one but the first thing that popped into my head was Richard Dadd's The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke:



The image doesn't do the painting justice, its amazing in the flesh. Highly detailed and tactile. It is also more appealing to me as the artist was declared insane and painted this whilst confined to Bethlem asylum.

This is probably the best thread on this forum. Beats the epic (and boring) Radar Rat sleeve thread that's for sure.

I would definitely recommend going to see this in person at the Tate Britain. I was walking through there a few years ago and this painting completely caught my attention. It is painted in amazingly microscopic detail and the details surrounding its creation and the artist's mental state is really fascinating. I wrote my dissertation about the artist and would love to own a piece by him.

The Richard Dadd reminds me of some of Stanley Spencers "Cookham" pieces - massive works depicting village life.

Its amazing along with almost every piece Munch has painted.

One of the 'The Scream' versions was also recently stolen along with Munch's 'Madonna' and one of them ended up with a 10 cm long rift in it :S

Just thinking in terms artists that do street work... the original of this. Actually any of the three would be nice, but this is my favourite. Who did get the original??

Man of taste. That's my favorite painting of all time too. So ahead of it's time. There is a fantastic book published by Prestel which is just about this one painting, and has numerous close ups of all the strange goings on. Worth checking out Slowmo.

Man! This is an impossible question Watson. There are just so many ways to go with this and then regret that you didn't pick some other work.

I'd pass on the Mona Lisa as its small and not very impressive. Plus too dry of a work for my taste.

I'd probably go with Guernica by Picasso.

Though also close on my list would be a couple of museum Basquiat paintings.

Its one of those questions where you'd have to fly around the world, sit with each for a second, and then choose - because each hits you so differently.

Other notable contenders:

Couple Several Dali's - the one in the playboy mansion possibly
Jackson Pollack - so many could make my list
Warhol's Bloody Marilyn (The one that the bullet that shot him went through - was owned by the Niarchos family)

Works in the last three years (If I was limited to that):

Paul Insect's coffee table at the Outsiders Exhibit would be an impulsive fun one
Several large pieces by Banksy, Choe, Micallef all are in the running
Hirst Formaldehyde Cow just to fuck with people

For me the giant 3M X 3M green Parla upstairs at his last exhibition at Elms. Blew me away.
