Biggest Progress in 2008?, by graeme501 on Dec 12, 2008 15:51:53 GMT 1, since the year is coming to an end, thought i would start a thread to see what artists people think have made the biggest progress this year?
i think herakut have had a pretty big year, and have evolved stylistically and their work seems more mature - they are my artists of 2008
others that i think have been brilliant have been JR for his immense street work, conor harrington for his new abstract style, and remi rough's canvases look brilliant, check out the yellow and blue one from urban angels latest show

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by illy on Dec 12, 2008 15:56:00 GMT 1, Rouke Vandal for me by a long way..... Guy Denning is fine tuning things, but Vandal has really stepped up a few gears. Everyone else seems to be quite stagnent in my opinion... and Russ Mills doing some nice stuff as well.

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by alsbabar on Dec 12, 2008 16:00:07 GMT 1, I think this year Banksy has had the most phenomenol - given the publicity, change of direction with his works, shows and general impact in the art scene
Herakut - imo is not in the mainstream, and exists too much within the forums - they have still to break beyond it.

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by graeme501 on Dec 12, 2008 16:01:46 GMT 1, Vhils has had a very good year, especially since he was pretty much unknown at the start of the year, and outshone everyone at cans, but i wouldn't say that eine has progressed at all in 2008
edit: alsbabar, u changed ur post

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by Heavyconsumer on Dec 12, 2008 16:02:28 GMT 1, I've not been a huge fan previously, but I don't think you can look past Eelus in terms of progress. His style has matured a lot more this year than anyone else I can think of.
The only other candidate is Banksy imo. Has anyone even come close to his altered view of conceptual art that was the petshop? I think this may mark the most significant "progress" of the year, in terms of any one artist's development and adding more strings to their bow.
Herakut have certainly progressed in terms of popularity, but their artwork doesn't appear to me to have moved on in leaps and bounds imo.

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by Existencil on Dec 12, 2008 16:05:42 GMT 1, Petshop was a massive step forward for Banksy. I was sorry that his new prints didn't mirror this step.
JR is also a definite contender.

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by Deleted on Dec 12, 2008 16:06:11 GMT 1, Banksy hands down, everyone else just gets left behind.
CCTV under one Nation. (Location!) CANS (did anyone think it was poo? no.) NY Rats (Classic timing) The Pet Store (weird but mighty cool) Nola and the new one
Can anyone match him.

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by Bram on Dec 12, 2008 16:06:13 GMT 1, I agree with Illy. Rouke has come on leaps and bounds (I want some of what he's taking ;D)
I also think that Elbowtoe has gone up a level or two. The maturity of Josh Keyes work this year as been mind boggling.
There could also be an opposite thread of "missing in action in 2008"

Where does he mention mainstream he said progress of work. The only person on the forum thats mainstream is Banksy, so should get the most developed vote ??

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by Daniel Silk on Dec 12, 2008 16:10:13 GMT 1, Eelus has come along really well in the last six months or so ;D Prefab will be one to look out for next year, going by his last few releases. Sickboy and Eine have really turned things up a bit this year too ;D Also Cartrain has come out of nowhere and really pissed off people by doing things that they would never have the guts to do ;D So good on him!

I agree with what you're saying, but not that his work has really progressed. He's doing what he did before (which is amazing) and the only change imo is the sheer scale of the Favela piece. That was stunning, bur as for biggest pregress? Not so sure I can agree with that. Brilliant artists though, no question.

a progress of works doesnt necessarily have to be a change in style, it could be also a progress on perception and appreciation in collectability

Biggest Progress in 2008?, by jusdeep on Dec 12, 2008 16:14:08 GMT 1, Have to agree with Heavyconsumer on this one. Although I thought the Herakut show was one of the Strongest this year, in terms of progress they haven't really broken any new ground, only opened peoples eyes to their work. Eelus has reinvented his work and is looking to be a real player for '09 in my opinion.

true That JR's style hasn't changed that much but as aslabar said progress means many things - and being part of tate thing with faile and the huge work he did all over London with laz really raised his profile. And Favela must be a contender for piece of the year surely
Other that That got to say Eelus too - he's grown up as an artist this year - and the wife's now a big fan too - which says a lot...
