POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by G-Man on Oct 23, 2008 22:00:39 GMT 1, As much as I love POW and Dora especially
It seems to me that whatever they release sells out, now I have been recently critical of their 1 or 2 colour cheap to produce screen prints, so was pleased to see a 9 colour one at last, but..........
Come on!?
The Lucy McLauchlan prints from the Fame festival from StudiocCromie are bloody lovely and lower runs for a similar price to the Gee Vaucher print
IMO they are vastly superior, I just dont get the GV print. So what? there are some planes dropping bombs in some geese!!?
It seems that whatever POW do they can do no wrong and other print houses take more time and care over their printing and release great prints by just as established artists but fail to sell out!
Now dont get me wrong this is a good thing for me because I get time to consider my purchases, discuss them with the missus then buy the stuff I like, BUT, if its on POW then I have to make a snap decision and that sucks.
So after that rant I was keen to know what people thought?

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by mishco on Oct 23, 2008 22:13:03 GMT 1, simple answer, seek out new artists and buy originals at the same price as you'd buy a print from any large print house. hand painted 1offs that nobody else will have.
here's one guy for staters, nice dude as well www.darrencamplin.com/
or here's his prices on facebook www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24065160875

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by Prescription Art on Oct 23, 2008 22:43:23 GMT 1, I've not bought anything from POW this year.... the prints have either been too crap, too expensive, or too crap and too expensive.

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by gbh on Oct 23, 2008 23:58:34 GMT 1, I'm afraid the McLauchlan is just not for me, totally not my cup of tea. Does that mean it's bad art? I don't think so. does it? should I jump in the McLauchlan thread and say how shit it is then? Seems to be how it works around here.

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by dmandpenfold on Oct 24, 2008 9:57:53 GMT 1, depends on the work itself... i dont rate the LM release for me it doesn't do it. Likewise i've never been taken with any of the GV prints on POW. Then yesterday i was pleasantly surprised by GV (no i didnt find her in my jacuzzi).
I like that print for a number of reasons. However it doesn't mean i like the others, of those i still have the same opinion. You dont like the GV print fair enough, but it hardly needs all this fuss, some people like it and some dont is that such a difficult concept. Lets move on.

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by gbh on Oct 24, 2008 10:11:09 GMT 1, is it a fair assumption that with so few votes so far ...a large percentage of the sales were to off forum punters?

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by RYCA on Oct 24, 2008 10:40:52 GMT 1, i use www.hipposcreenprinters.co.uk , the key is oil/solvent based inks. good paper stock (i personally hate recycled paper), oh yeah, the idea is critical. one colour or 32, depends on if the image is complex. giclee prints are easy and quick, but with the addition of silkscreen elements it is a nice way to get lots of colour, textures and finishes(gloss and matt on the same piece). a good example of this 'mixed media' is manuel duboe's new print... 'year zero'.

POW prints vs Any Other print studio, by Little Art Book on Oct 24, 2008 15:30:24 GMT 1, Ryca - you've hit the nail on the head! I know we're a little off topic here but....
Forget water based inks totally. We've tried to go a little more environmentally friendly at our print studio recently and tested water based inks. Compared to oil / solvent inks they are rubbish. As for recycled paper etc - save it for your photocopier. I buy a lot of prints for my personal collection and am always disappointed when the print is on recycled paper. Quality paper doesn't cost a fortune and holds its colour much better. So, well said Ryca!!!
