Michael Halsband has had his hand (and eye) on the pulse of American culture since the 1970βs. His 1985 iconic portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol in boxing gloves became such a staple of popular culture that its appropriation by contemporary visual artists and street artists continues thirty years on. This was an auspicious moment in a career that saw Halsband photographing a canon of 20th century artists, writers and musicians including James Brown, David Byrne, Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, and many more. Michael Halsbandβs work has been featured internationally in publications from GQ to Vogue, ad campaigns for Calvin Klein and cover art for the top talent of his generation.
This Grand Gallery exhibition will span over three decades of Halsbandβs work and includes two never before exhibited works: a photograph from the 1985 Warhol/ Basquiat Boxing Gloves series and an up-close 35mm film of The Rolling Stones in live performance.
The show will include two new portraits from the Basquiat and Warhol boxing shoot.

Music was a major area of exploration for the late artist, acting as a producer and art director for The Velvet Underground's first (and arguable most famous) record The Velvet Underground & Nico. But that wasn't the first time Warhol was involved with musicβand it certainly wouldn't be the last. From 1949 to 1987, he designed 57 record covers from the instantly recognizable to the enigmatic. From Count Basie to John Lennon to the William Tell Overture, this entire body of work is now organized and contextualized in the 264-page hard-cover tome "Andy Warhol: The Complete Commissioned Record Covers."
Author Paul MarΓ©chal (a noted Warhol collector, scholar and professor) tells the story behind each record cover. A quick flip through the book reveals Warhol's creative evolutionβbranching out from sketch-like line drawings, through printmaking and into color experimentation. All the while, MarΓ©chal places each record cover into its larger context within Warhol's full body of work. Not surprisingly, Warhol developed relationships with many of the musicians he worked for, sometimes even influencing not just the cover but music itself.
