Sunday B Morning prints would be a good start. There are more fake Warhols in auctions than real ones.

Am I right in thinking the Sunday B Morning prints are the actual screen prints from the originals and were licensed to be produced after but then they fell out? After that they were legally allowed to continue printing them?

Flash series is affordable, as is committee 2000 and the Ladies and Gentleman series. Buy from top tier auction house or reputable galleries.

I think you've got some decent options with a $5000 ceiling - toward the high end of that, if you really want something signed, you might be able to find something from Ladies and Gentlemen or Hand Colored Flowers (1974). U.N. Stamp would probaly fall in there as well, and maybe, like as suggested above some of the Flash prints

As far as ephemera, there's some really good stuff for well under your limit - the 60s Castelli-era mailers (Flowers 1964 and Green Stamps 1966) should be around $1500. Although they're not signed and were issued folded, both are close variations of prints that are in the catalogue raisonee - I feel like they're kind of more than ephemera, even though they're not an edition per se.

In a similar vein, but also an edition with an known number, that I think it might be possible with your budget, is the unsigned version of Lincoln Center ticket. This was an edition of 500 on paper (signed version was 250 on opaque acrylic) - also mentioned in the catalog.

There was a 1981 Marilyn announcement (12"x12") for a Castelli retrospective- it's not in the catalogue, but they're known and come up fairly often at the regional auction houses

I think you're right to avoid SBMs the - "real" ones from 1970 are still dodgy as hell (although one that he signed "This is not by me" might be kind of cool to have) and the later ones are fakes of fakes

I remember being in Amsterdam about 4 years ago and a gallery there had a signed Warhol ed of 1,000 etching/B&w lithograph of Marilyn, for somewhere in the €750-1,500 mark. I’ve never seen one since, but remember the gallery owner telling me it was quite rare to see a signed print of that large edition by him, but it offered good value for a print collector. The signature looked authentic and in pencil but I never asked if it was a stamp etc. I’d still like to get one if I ever find one.

I love the latest Lego Marilyn release. Been thinking on that for our next lockdown

I still belive that the first print of Sticky Fingers with the Andy Warhol with the stamp inside is a good start point, the same for the Index book
